Morr, Lord of Death
The Traveler Beyond
Morr is God of Death, Dreams, and Dreamers. He holds sway over illusions and all things that are not what they seem. A contemplative god, he guards the souls of the departed from necromancers, just as his priests guard the corpses buried in the Gardens of Morr, and protects the dreams of men and women from the daemons that would pervert them. Morr and his devoted followers are the eternal enemies of the undead, and guardians against grave and tomb robbers.
Morr was the first of the Elder Gods to awaken and it is said he will be the last to sleep (for the gods do not die). When he awoke, he saw that he was alone, and roamed the far reaches of the cosmos in search of companionship. But he could find no living thing, for the Prime Material Plane had not yet been created. But finally, in the very center of the cosmos, he came upon the Eye that sees all. From the Eye, Morr learned that all beings of the cosmos must make a pilgrimage across the cosmic river called Styx, there to reside. Knowing this, Morr laid claim to the realm across the river, for after his long and fruitless search for companions, he desired to be in a place where all beings should come to him.
Yet Morr's loneliness grew, and he desired to make himself a companion. And so, consulting the Eye, he learned that to make a companion he should drink of the waters of the Styx. And he did so, and a deep sleep came upon him. And from the depths of his heart, a spirit emerged that was Morr and yet was not Morr. And Morr's sleep was troubled, and the troublesome sleep shaped the spirit. When Morr awoke, he sought to embrace the spirit, but it had no body and could not be embraced. But the spirit was sore afraid that Morr had sought to kill it, and so it hid from Morr and only approached Morr when sleep came upon him. And the spirit entered into Morr's dreams and tried to strangle him. But each night Morr was able to shake the spirit off.
When three nights had so passed, the spirit learned from the depths of Morr's mind that he should drink from the waters of the Styx to gain power. And the spirit drank from the waters and he became real. But the waters had driven him mad, and he took the name Isstyx, which means the "madness of the Styx." And Morr hated the image of his own madness and sought to destroy it. But Isstyx fled and each dwelt alone. And the power of Isstyx was mighty in his realm. He created the race of Night Hags and caused the Daemons of the Three Glooms to bow down before him. And when humans appeared on Aerth, Isstyx called to them in their dreams and caused them to fear death. And the people of Aerth feared him and called him Incabulos, Lord of Nightmares and Evil Sendings.
But Morr knew that Isstix sought to control humans through fear, and he appeared to them ever at the hour of their death as a friend, welcoming them to his realm. And the people turned to Morr in their age and infirmity, for Morr brought them peace. And they dwelt with him gladly in his grey hall, when the world was young and death was not feared.
