Throughout Ynys Prydein warfare has become a way of life. In CY 705, the Cymbrian Kingdom of Dumnonia fell victim to the aggressive expansion of Wessex. Under the rulership of King Ine, Wessex dominates its eastern neighbors Sussex, Essex, and Kent, while threatening Kerniu in the southwest and engaging in a protracted struggle with Mercia over control of the River Thamos. The “Free City” of Lordsgate entertains its overlords in the Frisian trade consortium as honored guests, while in far Northumbria, Osric the Usurper holds his barbarian court in the City of Edgemoor itself. Pictish tribes roam the northern highlands, sacrificing those they vanquish to their savage Blood God, while the pirates of Eriu and Dal Riada harry the coastal lands in search of loot and slaves. Human settlements are plagued by goblins, orcs, ogres, and giants, some making their way south from the Land of Iuz, others skulking in woods and caves by day and venturing forth for murder and mayhem at night. River trolls crouch in the reedy shallows of sleepy waterways, while hags and foul croaking things lurk in the fens, ever ready to turn the unwary traveler into a quick meal.
