The war of the outer gods
As can easily be seen in the world of the Dreamlands, the Outer Gods are involved in the Hunters' power, indeed they are the very source of their magic and mutations. But why, why do beings similar to the forsaken Cthulhu lend their powers to the humans who seek to slay that very entity?
As can be read in the diary of the late Percival, it would seem that the writing left around the sleeping city and within the crypts was inscribed by a civilisation of servants of the great Yog-Sothoth, a powerful and wise god who seems to be behind the sealing of Cthulhu through his most powerful servants who now guard the outskirts of the sleeping city, although when the crypt was opened after the failure of the last quest for the grail, one of the two guardians seems to have emerged from his sleep to bring desolation to the north of the continent before disappearing again into the depths of the garden of dreams.
With this information it is possible to conclude that the external gods are not allies, and even seem hostile to each other which explains the collaboration of some of them with humans to prevent the awakening of the great Cthulhu, however, it is impossible to predict the extent of collaboration between these gods and humans because it is clear that they still consider us as common insects and would have no trouble crushing us if it were possible for them to physically appear in our realm.
