Wage structures in Daly

Wage earners in Daly tend to be paid depending on their skill level and prospects, with most wages being fairly standard, but plenty of room for negotiation and flex.

Minimum Wage

"Unskilled" workers such as day labourers and the like are guaranteed the Dalian minimum wage of 2SP for each day they work, although this is often paid in the form of food and lodging in return for labour, resulting in an actual amount "in-hand" of 8-9 coppers per day.   However! If the unskilled worker at hand is a family member of the business owner, or an apprentice with potential to move up, they can often be paid closer to 1GP a day. Even if part of this is taken in kind as food, lodging and sometimes training, that typically leaves a decent amount of money at the end of the week for saving or spending.   Peddlers who travel about smaller settlements selling items they have picked up in larger towns also tend to average about 2SP per day, although this is rarely as steady as this and is more often a tenday or more with no income then several GP worth at once.

Living Wage

1GP a day is often considered the Dalian 'Living wage'. On this amount, you can usually secure a decent room in a boarding house or a small apartment in the less salubrious parts of town, pay for food and drink, buy clothes and take care of your equipment.   Sometimes folk earning a living wage are considered semi-skilled- that is, they have the beginnings of a craft or trade, or have a form of regular employment that enables them to learn how to perform a set of tasks well.

Professional Wage

Once you are considered skilled, and have gained a level of proficiency in your trade, you typically start earning a professional wage.   At it's lowest, this is 2GP a day, although the longer you have been in a job, or the better you are at it, the more likely you are to be earning the higher figure of 3 or even more towards 4GP a day.   At this level, you've usually built up a good reputation for what you do, and are far less likely to find yourself without work (and better able to negotiate for better wages if you change job).

Expert Fees

Very few who draw a regular wage approach the expert fees range. For betweeen 4 and 10GP a day, you are providing the most skilled or knowledgeable services, usually to the nobility or a large institution.   It's not unheard of for trusted servants running large estates to command this level of daily wage, or for wizards or sorcerers to be kept on retainer.

Vagabonds, layabouts and children

There is a level, somewhere between those who survive on only their wits or the generosity of others and those who turn their hand to unskilled labour, that is typically taken up by those who are unable to work regularly but are capable of basic tasks.   Often in the form of vagabonds, drunkards, layabouts and children, it is often possible to find those who will carry out simple tasks for a few coppers, or even a whole day of tasks for a silver or so.   Paid below the minimum wage, and therefore paying no taxes, these folk either have a fairly squalid existence or are already relying on someone else to cover all of their living costs- it's usually fairly easy to see at a glance if this is a well-fed merchant's son eager to make a little extra pocket money, or a desperate woman who will do anything to put food in her belly tonight.
