Lighting
The Sun has always provided light to the Surface, but those underground, or those living in the Underdark had to develop this technology themselves. The first - and for a time only - things we had underground were Night Leaves, a type of Underdark plant that emits a constant faint glow, but over time also darkens the outside layers of creatures like a coat of paint.
Many species that used to live underground during this era have developed a strong sense of sight, often called darkvision, that allows them to see better in low-light environments. Many still died to unseen threats so we needed to improve visibility - and thus Lighting Technology was born.
Eventually fire (torches, then later candles) started being used, but it was quite dangerous inside the caverns due to suffocation so better methods had to be found. Even long before the societies and industries of today existed - during the Age of Dwarves - Dwarves have discovered lamps that were fueled by Oil.
We have since got used to living in well-lit environments - even underground - that follow the natural cycle of day and night. Ever since the arrival of Magic new kinds of Blood Crystal fueled lamps have been made - and they were more potent and cheap, thus it was no longer a matter of budget, but a matter of taste.
