Xala

Being akin to the oldest race of the world, the Half-Elves believe that a single deity, the Goddess Xala, created the world. They say that there has never been a time in which there was nothing. Xala is, and always has been, and transcends the notions of time and space. Where there has always been light, there has also always been darkness, and the Elves call this Evil Goraroth; Elvish for 'Lord of the Void'.   According to the scriptures in their holy tome, the Xalas Taranièn, Xala and Goraroth fought endlessly in the Eternal Vales. When Goraroth felt that he would not be victorious, he withdrew to his dark domain, the Void. There, he devised the most terrible of ideas; he would come forth from his lair and let Xala's searing light touch him for a brief moment, so that he could use the power of both Light and Void to try and create a new energy.   As Goraroth came forth upon the Eternal Vale and crossed its vast plains, Xala smote him with holy fire. Upon the fire touching his being, he immediately drew back to his halls, and there, in the depths of the Void, he perverted the holy fire that so burned his skin into a terrible being, a mockery upon the face of the Light. Then, the first Demon was born.   When Goraroth next came forth and Xala responded, she saw that he was not alone. Grief struck her heart and her tears rained on the Vale. When defeat was near, Xala’s tears touched the black skin of the perverted angel of Light. Immediately, the Demon’s black skin ignited with the sacred fire, and started flaking, revealing a being of the purest gold underneath. The purged demon turned on his creator, and together with Xala, pushed him back into the depths of his realm, where he would remain for ages to come.   For the first time, the Goddess could execute her divine plan unhindered; dispelling the darkness that so abundantly lay on the cosmos and illuminating its every corner, creating a safe space for her children to awaken. The cleansed demon, whom she named Tyrael, would from now on be her most faithful ally and trusted councillor. Together, they designed the realisation of Xala’s plan, and created the giant orb at the centre of the cosmos that would be the home to her children.   Goraroth’s heinous act of perversion had shown Xala that alone, or even with the help of her advisor, she would always be vulnerable. Therefore, she decided to use her unparalleled powers of Light to create the Xal'Eri; seven mighty Holy spirits. She tasked these spirits with aiding her in the cleansing of the cosmos, and the creation of the world that might carry her children. Each of the spirits had their own plane of influence and their own corresponding role in her plan:   Aeras, the Spirit of Air, was tasked with letting streams of air loose on the world, spreading warmth and cold over the face of the planet. He was also tasked with filling the air with life.   Treita, the Water Spirit, was to bless the world with life-giving water, crafting the seas and streams that would travel the lands.   Daeros, the Earth Spirit, was tasked with the raising of mountains and the crafting of tools.   Lilièth, the Spirit of Nature, built the forest, the woods, and all the creatures therein.   Mortus, the Spirit of the Vale, was to maintain and keep the deathless realm.   Dormil, the Spirit of Dreams, was to govern the hopes and dreams of the children of Xala.   Herath, the Spirit of Fury, was tasked with the temperance of the souls and the protection of the Holy domain.   Fyra, the Spirit of Fire, was to govern the planet’s temperature and the passions of all its inhabitants.   Aided by her servants, Xala formed the planet. When all her Xal’Eri were in place, they together shaped the world to Xala’s image, and readied it for the arrival of the Firstborn, the Elves, whom she then created in her image, and set loose upon the world.   The Elvish myth of creation does not mention the wakening of the other, younger races, and they have beheld their emergence in wonder.
