Once a prominent noble within Katrina's court, Valthorin grew up in Nightfall Keep and received the highest education as an architect and military engineer. The noble lived during an era of upheaval, the 'shadow magic craze' that defined the 3rd Era, when new magical inventions and ways to manipulate the metaphysical cosmos emerged almost yearly. Valthorin's fascination with the interplay of darkness and fortification led him to study shadow magic and military engineering extensively, even though he never became an official sorcerer. His loyalty and innovative ideas quickly caught Mistress Katrina's attention, and he was eventually selected to oversee the construction of Gloomwatch.Role in the Eclipse War:
During the Eclipse War in 3430 AE, as threats loomed from the Eastern seas, Valthorin proposed the creation of a bastion that could harness the power of shadows not just for defense but as a weapon of war. His vision was to create a fortress that embodied the essence of The Realm of Dusk. Valthorin meticulously planned Gloomwatch's architecture, integrating shadow magic into its very foundations. He devised the Beacon of the Abyss to not only serve as a lighthouse but as a tool for disorienting enemy ships, using a blend of sorcery and engineering. The walls of Gloomwatch, imbued with shadow essence, were designed to be not just physical barriers but snares that could weaken and disorient foes before they even reached the gates. Understanding the importance of a strong military presence, Valthorin ensured Gloomwatch was equipped with state-of-the-art armories, training facilities, and defensive mechanisms. Thanks to the architect's innovations, Gloomwatch's oppressive aura proved crucial to the defense of the realm during the Eclipse War, which paved the way for the Dark Pact's ultimate triumph. Lord Valthorin's strategic genius and architectural innovation have left a lasting mark on Gloomwatch and The Realm of Dusk. Under his guidance, Gloomwatch has repelled countless invasions, standing as a testament to the strength and cunning of Katrina's dominion. Lord Valthorin received General status during the later years of the Eclipse War. Even though he himself attempted to stay away from the front lines and the fighting, he still met his end from arrowfire during the invasion of The Garden of Mazes in 3438 AE. It is chronicled that the arrow that pierced his skull came from none other than Fildarae Qinrel's bow, but it's impossible to verify the source for certain.
