Sashelas

God of Primordial Seas

Once, all of existence was that of the Primordial Seas, Abzu. Chaos swirled unending in the dark, deep ocean of infinite potential, but never order. Sashelas ruled in this age. His power to wield the chaos of the primordial sea - the raw magic that flowed through existence, the untapped power of creation - made him the strongest of the gods. Where other gods saw this power he held and feared or envied it, Tiamat saw it and fell deeply in love. The two were wed in the Abzu and soon begat their son, Oghma, who was entrusted to keep the forbidden knowledge of chaos magic that Sashelas held.   Pholtus, God of Law and Order, envied and hated Sashelas. He wished to tame the seas and create a stability, a uniformity to creation. The two god-kings argued many times. Pholtus pointed to the mortal lives that began and ended and never understood their place in creation, and those of the daemons who obeyed no master and moved as they wished, and insisted to Sashelas that the Abzu must stop swirling endlessly and become rested so that creation could settle. Sashelas laughed at Pholtus, and bade him goodbye. What need to listen to a petty Law-King when the chaos of creation is your domain? Tiamat warned Sashelas that the other gods might conspire against him, but Sashelas believed that as long as their son kept the knowledge hidden, they were powerless to overthrow him.   The age of Primordial Chaos, of the endless Abzu, came to a close when Sashelas was attacked by Pholtus. They struck blade to blade, fighting for twelve days, evenly matched in all forms. Sashelas drew chaos into his blade, but the order of Pholtus' could counter its power. Finally, Pholtus was able to grab Sashelas by the beard and pull him from the Abzu, removing him from his power, and strike a killing blow. He threw the body of the Chaos King to the Abzu and brought his head to the Samu before diving to the bottom of Abzu and lifting the Ma from its murky silt.   Tiamat grieved for eleven days, each day birthing a beast in her grief and sorrow. Pholtus offered mercy to Oghma and allowed him to keep the secrets of chaos, as long as he was to keep them in Samu from now on. Sashelas' head still rests in Samu atop a mighty peak, as far from the seas of creation as it could be.
