The Tome of Endless Knowledge Item in D&D Forgotten Realms | World Anvil

The Tome of Endless Knowledge

The first page of the book, which is the only page with any writing on it, states the following:

I, Arcanus, was born into a family of powerful mages in the esteemed Mageocracy of Thay. From a young age, it was clear to our leader, Thayd, that I was destined for greatness. My natural aptitude for magic was undeniable and my parents recognized my potential. They saw to it that I received the best education possible, and I excelled in my studies.

As I grew older, my ambition only grew stronger. I was determined to become the greatest mage the world had ever known, and I devoted myself to my studies with a fierce determination. I spent countless hours poring over ancient tomes and scrolls, and I conducted countless experiments in my quest for knowledge.

Despite my many achievements, I was not content to simply study magic. I wanted to put my skills to use, and I often used my magic to further my own goals of acquiring the worlds knowledge, for there was no greater goal than this.

As I grew older and my skills and knowledge increased, I became increasingly powerful and influential within the Mageocracy of Thay, being appointed the Archpriest of Knowledge Acquisition. I was respected and feared by many, and my reputation as a brilliant and powerful mage only grew with each passing year.

And then, I had a breakthrough. I discovered a way to create a book that could hold an infinite amount of knowledge within its pages. I spent years perfecting the spell, and when it was finally complete, I created the Tome of Endless Knowledge.

The Tome of Endless Knowledge was a powerful tool, and I used it to great effect. I could copy any book I came across into the tome, allowing me to access a vast library of knowledge at any time. I could also use the tome to create copies of my own spells and magical techniques, which I could then share with other mages. This creation gave Thay an advantage over our enemies; ALL of the knowledge of the civilization in one book, vs. needing to build many libraries… How brilliant I was to create such a thing!

As word of the Tome of Endless Knowledge spread, many other mages sought to obtain it for themselves. Some were willing to pay any price for the chance to possess such a powerful tool, while others were more nefarious in their methods. I gave them nothing, for they were not worthy of my prized possession and the knowledge it contained.

If you are reading this today, it is because I have properly secured my legacy. Treat this book with the respect it deserves, for I, Arcanus, was a true master of magic, and my greatness will never be forgotten as long as this book exists.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Book has the following properties, which are outlined in detail HERE and below:
  • This tome is full of seemingly endless blank pages. If you were trying to flip through it cover to cover, you would never reach the end. If this book is held against any book it will copy the contents into itself.
  • This book copies 1,000 pages in twelve hours, 500 pages in six hours. Or approximately 300 words per minute. Drawings and pictures can also be copied into the book, but take three and a half minutes to do so. For a picture is worth 1,000 words. :-)
  • Once something is copied into the book, the reader must simply open the book wishing to read whatever they've copied. Infinite pages can be torn from the book and instantly turn into plain mundane paper. Any words that were on the page torn from the book instantly vanish once the page is torn away. Only the one who initiated the copying of text or wrote in the book themselves can read the words from the book, however others can read them over their shoulder.
  • If this tome is used to copy another book that is magical in nature (or is meant to increase player's stats), the words are copied, but none of the magical effects are. Lastly, if ye so choose, the book can be opened and the pages set on fire. The infinite pages will burn for eternity until the book is extinguished or closed.
