The Howling Pass

Located on the border between North Cambria and The Broken Colonies, the Howling Pass is a towering canyon of dusty rock and sheer cliffs. The canyons are innumerable, and though passing north or south is simple enough by way of sun and star maps, finding a specific destination within the canyon often proves difficult or impossible for even seasoned adventurers.

Inhabitants

Thri-kreen. Psychic insects that operate without any sense of individuality. They look down upon Azraelian priests in favour of their own sun god, Juno. Occasionally, they wield light and fire magic. They cooperate with at least three species in the pass; Ankhegs, which they use as pack animals; Giant Dragonflies, used as flying mounts, scouts and war-beasts (when the need arises and (allegedly, though never witnessed) Throx, which appear as hulking, brutish versions of the thri-kreen themselves and are debatably of the same species. Their craftsmanship is usually a combination of chitin and clay. They wield metal weapons, but have never been observed to have forges or smithies.   The Beast Below. A creature more or less tamed by the Thri-kreen. The creature's body has never been seen, and it appears only to unfortunate adventurers as colossal tentacles writhing from a deep, dark pit.   Savage beasts. In addition to the sentient, intelligent Thri-kreen, the pass is also home to wyverns, griffons, bulettes, ankhegs and basilisks.

Sites of Interest

Secluded Grove. A quiet grove that once played host to a great hydra until the hydra's death in 368 S.A. Reportedly, the grove is also the crash site of a time-weathered airship, once belonging to the Iron Skyjacks.   Unholy Cave. Somewhere in the pass exists a cavern's mouth barred by a mystical barrier. The cave is rumoured to contain a Vald.   Obsidian Monoliths. A large clearing, open to the sky above. Drifting here are more than a dozen glass obelisks, between three and nine feet tall and hovering a few inches above the ground. Merchants and adventurers alike have passed through here.
