Chojan
Writing System
Chojan has a cuneiform alphabet of 21 letters, with 7 vowels, 7 hard consonants, and 7 soft consonants. While it is customary to align the letters in a certain way (Vowels with the branches at the top, consonants with the branches on the right), it is not required, and no letters can be confused due to rotation if they are written correctly. This is important, as the Choja often write along the walls of their tunnels, where orientation can be questionable. Chojan is written in columns, top to bottom and then left to right. There is a form of Chojan prose where the words are written in one line, circling the inside of a tunnel and flowing easily with no clear beginning or end. Different words are differentiated by starting a new line, and long straight lines are drawn between columns in order to prevent confusion. Emphasis is given by emphasis words such as Xr and Shw rather than punctuation. The direction in which a piece of writing should be read is shown by a circle in the upper right corner, which indicates the starting point.
