5.5x8mm Astra - Pistol Cartridge

Mechanics & Inner Workings

5.5x8mm Astra is quite simple and it’s casing being extremely reusable as it was the first Cartridge designed to ignite Sybeium and use Sybeium as a propellant: Verse’s normal smokeless gun powder, and whilst a bit more expensive then normal previous smokeless powder Cartridges due to needing stronger Quantum steel upgraded from normal brass and steel, in order to hold the massive pressures generated by Ground-SA type Sybeiums like Dazium / Dazite.

Another major difference is that instead of a primer used in rim and center old school gun Cartridges, it use’s a electric barb / prob that sends a very specific coded electric signal that will detonate it once armed by another type of signal sent to it. Furthermore it will not ignite with out due it being completely stable under all conditions.

History

The 5.5x8mm was invented in 1652 by Rudolph V. Ackerman the new round was absolutely revolutionary: In being the first of it’s kind ever seen or invented and first viable pistol type and sized Cartridge, fitting at the time a full sized and weighted rifle level projectile, able to obtain rifle level performance of older generation rifle full power rifle Cartridges.

Due to the newly invented gun powder propellant of Dazium / Dazite invented in 1650, Dazium / Dazite was in a type of materials called Sybeium, a category of Quantum steel based chemical explosive.

These new rounds packed a massive punch for their size and was able to defeat essentially all infantry armor of the time: The round was such a leap in power being the first ever to use Dazium / Dazite, it was essentially able to penetrate when using the right AP ammo type paired with Dazium Ground-SA Type Si Class Hi Grade Sybeium Chemical Explosive was capable of penetrating the frontal armor of nearly all medium tanks of the time, and even a very modest amount of heavy tanks as well.

Although this type of ammo was obscenely expensive and very very rare due to micro triple stage shape charge system these rounds used. The obscenely complex shape charges where very expensive in all aspects: Time, money and materials used to make.

Let alone the sheer difficulty the manufacturing technology of the time had making them resulting in defect rates of 95% being the norm when making them. Not to mention the sheer time alone they took to produce due to the only viable manufacturing methods: Requiring long drying times and other aspects that took up massive chunks of time before the next manufacturing process could be started: Which required massive batches to be made, in order for it to even be even remotely economical even by the standards of the UNE.

In the year 1750 the first guided rounds where introduced but they remained very rare on the battle field mostly used just by spy's and spec ops. As these first generation 5.5.8mm Astra guided rounds where really only able to to steer to hit things in a 25 degree cone in front of it, in addition to being extremely expensive, they required a massive 80 pound backpack containing computer gear in order to function correctly. which required spies on assassin missions in their usage of these guided bullets to have the computer system hidden a number of miles away and using a fairly large radio antenna in order to communicate with the bullet.

it would not be until 2005 prompted by the arms development program that started in 1975, that was a response to Arvha boarders boarding the navy’s of the UNE, till advances in computer hardware science enable the cheap mass production of micro electronics and computers, micro sensors, and micro astronautic: Allowed guided rounds to be produced that where both reasonable priced roughly 25$ a round at the time, and mass produce able in very high volumes.

This new guided round was specially developed for the M22 Astra the very first wholly independent UNE smart pistol requiring no additional outside equipment to use it’s smart functions a gun designed for ideal naval use in mind, with every computer system vastly miniaturized. This was required due to Arvha adapting the use of order of the nova to board UNE ships: Due to them being consider by Arvha Warrior culture, espically by order of the nova members a rite of passage and a true challenge worthy of their might, and their ability to literally dodge bullets required this guided round to even be effective.

Significance

This round has was so ahead of it’s time and revolutionary at it’s time of invention, introduction and implementation that it has been the primary and most popular pistol cartridge both in Warfare and military use being used in every military conflict since it’s invention minor or major, for it’s reliability and performance in a small package. Hailed for it’s capabilities in the civilian world for it’s potency as a high capacity high performance self defense weapon, favored by hunters as a light capable hunting weapon when used with lower power rounds in order to not ruin to much meat of the animal when shot and killed. So was the popularity of this round lead it to being used as the primary pistol cartridge of the UNE’s military’s for the last 368 year from 1652 to 2020 and still going strong.

The penetration capabilities of this round where so legendary it quickly earned it self the nickname of “Five & Die”: Because of it’s remarkable ability to easily penetrate things like sand bags and buildings and still easily have enough ballistic stability to fly straight as a arrow, hit the person behind it, and penetrate their armor and wound or kill them.

It would also easily penetrate the lightly armored vehicles of the time which where the most widely used at the time, such as armored infantry personal carriers and light tanks which where only armored with 2 inches of metal at the time: Whilst previously sufficient for all but the most heavyset of small arms machine guns and even light cannons.

now with 5.5x8mm Astra 2 inches of armor using armors of the time, was for All but the most advanced of quantum steels at the time: was turned from world class protection, to literally overnight woefully under armored to protect from the new 5.5x8mm Astra round which sliced though them like butter. With 5.5 Astra and guns firing it such as the “M1 Astra” Model of 1652 designed by Rudolph V. Ackerman the most popular pistol use by humans from 1652 to 1660 when the M2 Astra was developed: being so cheep to make and it’s ability to be made in mass.

This release of this gun on to the battle field to all sides of wars going on in the 1650s in the 10s of millions overnight instantly obsoleted all but the most advanced of light armored vehicles of the time: it caused massive chaos as for example crews of lightly armored tanks previously use to a supreme level of protection, now found them self's practically naked on the battle field as every infantry man, every solider with a side arm could easily destroy their tank from 200 meters out with just a pistol.

This spurred on colossally massive shifts in military strategy over the following decade, where as lightly armored very quick moving “ranging from 150 to 250 miles per hour” military combat vehicles in the 5 to 25 ton range being the norm backuped by slower 30 to 50 ton medium armored vehicles with a speed ranging from 80 to 150 miles per hour, with tanks over 50 tons being quite rare at that time: Moved to very heavily armored and armed massive behenoths of super tanks and land ships range from 100 to 500 tons and even topping 2000 tons in 1680 with speeds ranging from 10 to 60 miles per hour at the absolute fastest of these late 1600s super sized tanks.

As Military leaders furiously frenziedly grasping at straws for solutions to this massive problem that presented it self that completely obsoleted entire mechanized armies of all militaries even great powers where not shielded from this. After tanks started getting destroyed like they where going out of style, the crews piloting these armored vehicles tried to come up with in field ad hok solutions such as adding massive and bulky armored plates easily totaling 10 plus inches thick in total where put on all sides of tanks and on their frontal armor which in reality actually did very little even still, unless shot at from very favorable angles to the tanks added armor. This extra armor balloned the tanks weight up to easily from 5 to 25 tons to 35 to 55 tons was common, dramatically slowing them down and making them easier to hit with only served to negate most of the advantages they gained via the extra ad hok armor.
