The End of the Mines

General Summary

Monstrosities below Culvella

Isla sent Madame Kitty Puss Puss to investigate the room from which the massive roar was heard. The group saw a huge cave system with ten kobolds and a sorcerer preparing one of the two Gold Roses members for sacrifice, the other was nowhere to be seen. After getting a rough idea of the layout from Isla, the group charged in, Heiron in the lead throwing a pickaxe. They were stopped, however, by the fearsome sight of a massive wyvern.

The great beast stood perched on the altar above the near-death humanoid on the slab. Its flesh hung loosely, tearing from the body. A viscous fluid of deep purples and blacks seeped from the various wounds across the creature. It had a huge, distended stomach that throbbed and emitted a dull, purple glow. It screeched and bit into the Gold Roses scout, tearing him in half.|

For a brief moment, the creature stood still, the carcass dripping from its maw. Then, in a pink mist, the soul of the humanoid began to float out of the corpse. The wyvern dropped the body from its jaws and opened its mouth. Inside, a crystal lodged into its upper mouth glowed and wracked the soul with pain. It screamed in agony and horror as the wyvern seemed to give the corporeal form, and swiftly devoured it. The soul screeched in hideous pain as it was consumed and seemed to be killed yet again. The wyvern finished its meal, then carried the parts of the physical body to its roost, a platform 30 feet up and at the back of the cave. The heroes shook their moment of stunned disbelief and charged.

An intense battle

The party engaged the kobolds for a brief moment in battle, and were able to quickly dispatch of a few of their foes. After a brief moment, however, the Wyvern joined the fray. As a few members descended on the sorcerer, the kobold spat insults at the group.

The great wyrm Irakke is too powerful, she will devour your souls
— A kobold wyvern zealot's last words in Draconic

Scoffs and insults came from both sides, as the party continued to engage the great beast. Unfortunately, the stinger of the wyvern found purchase in Heiron Nymus, and the tortollan fell. The party harried the flying creature, eventually causing the stomach to erupt a blast of energy, nearly destroying those close to it in the caves. However, after vicious and brutal combat, Isla Heron brought down the great beast with a series of well-placed magic missiles to the stomach, causing the creature to erupt with energy from the inside.

All were quiet as a droning, ominous humming sound came what remained of the Wyvern. The souls, visible for a brief moment, seemed happy and free. However, the crystal continued to spin, enchanted with some dark energy, and the nearby souls were torn through the crystal, then erupted out in a dark purple mist, streaming for the exit near the top of the cave, disappearing into the sky above. The crystal hummed and shook free of the jaw of the wyvern, began spinning quickly, the purples and blacks tearing out in tendrils of energy. Suddenly, it fell silent and clattered to the floor.

After a quick breath, the group was able to regain their composure and apply a healing potion to Heiron, who had stopped breathing. Through great luck, he was able to receive the healing tincture and regained consciousness. The party began to explore the caves, looking for information and answers, as well as loot. Yendor found an abomination of offspring, as well as the consumed remains of a wyvern mate and various humanoids. The creature was deformed but resembled a wyvern. Acting quickly, the ranger placed an arrow between the eyes of the creature's eyes and put it out of its misery. It died atop the treasure horde the wyvern had collected.

Climbing to the platform of the wyvern, the party inventoried what they had discovered and split up some treasures for everyone to investigate. Yendor De'sic examined an interesting coin which allowed him to change the fates of those around him. Auxi Sae found a war leader's belt that allows him to inspire his allies in combat. Lehiri found a savage dagger made from the remains of a black dragon, dripping with acid. And Isla Heron was very interested in a unique ring she had found that gave her advanced stealth and detection capabilities.

Yendor was excited to share the properties of the coin he had found, as well as Lehiri and Auxi. The party was talking excitedly and preparing to leave the caves when a confused Isla approached them, showing the ring and babbling inane nonsensical words. It was only the ranger Yendor who understood the Goblin that Isla was speaking, and Yendor was the only one that Isla understood when he responded in kind. She looked at the ring.
