Low Market - Valtaska

Valtaska's Low Market is one of the first places of the city proper that is seen by the populace of the world when entering by road. Sitting next to Newtown and across from the Diamond Dregs, Low Market is heavily trafficked by merchants and consumers looking for all their everyday essentials.   While Low Market is virtually all shops and warehouses, there are still several smaller pockets of residents, many large parks used for the occasional festival or market, and even a few specialty artisan stores and small temples. As long as one has a relatively simple idea of life, their entire existence can be lived without fear in the Low Market alone.

Security and Encounters

Being a primarily commercial area, the Low Market has a high amount of crime and a proportionally high number of guards. The vast majority of guards in the Low Market are younger and lower ranking, performing patrols or post-watch, but there are several stations where higher-ranking guards exist.   Every major market or intersection has at least a pair of guards on watch, with active patrols that take semi-random patrols between each post.

Potential Threats

Pick pocketing is quite common on the streets, leading to many people carrying their coins close to their bodies. During the busiest times of day, this may not be enough to help. In the early and late hours, muggings can occur, though they are less common once the merchants have all left, with most of the rogues heading to more profitable areas or to their own homes.   Scams, barter-brawls, and misunderstandings are the most common causes of physical violence in the district. Fights are often quickly stopped, as even unwatched areas of town often have a patrol close enough to hear the commotion.   Event Ideas:
  • While shopping, the PC is pickpocketed when someone bumps into them.
  • A merchant is offering a "discount" on their case of Potions. They are actually magically altered water with no value.
  • One merchant starts arguing with another, claiming the latter is trying to undercut him on purpose. The guards get involved.
  • When the PC goes to buy something they have previously purchased in the city, the merchant insists supply is low, and he must charge more.
  • A fight breaks out next to the PC's, as one man throws his punch, it misses and connects with one of the PCs

Services

All Mundane Services can be found somewhere within the Low Market.   Magical Services are not normally purchased in the Low Market. A discount magical artifact store may be available. Alchemists can be found still.   Recreational Activities are common in the district.   Illicit Activities exist but are difficult to find.   Transportation to other districts does not exist as a service. Personal Wagons and mounts can be purchased or rented from the Low Market, but caravans seldom depart from there.

Interesting Facts

  • There are three plazas that have a permanent Zone of Truth etched into them for merchants to prove authenticity. They aren't used.
  • Lore tells of great beasts and guilds of thieves in the sewers, but most of the sewers in the Low Market are barely big enough to crawl in.
  • The name "Low" was only suppose to denote that it is physically lower than the High Market, but many nobles still think of it as poor.
  • An alley called "Spider's Run" is winding and confusing to navigate despite its size. It's a common pick-pocket area.
  • Rumors speak about a figure that pickpockets only other pickpockets at dawn and dusk. No one has ever seen this entity though.
