The Dwarf King

A great number of Dwarves have embraced the stereotype from literature and fiction. They began by seeking out caves and caverns in which to hide away from normal Humans, particularly those attempting to round them up and place them in internment camps. Mountains were the natural place to seek out such places of refuge, and so there was a mass migration of Dwarves to mountainous regions such as the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Those unable to locate natural caves turned to creating their own underground hiding places. It turns out that Dwarves have a natural affinity for working with stone, and can easily determine the best places to dig.

A leader emerged from the masses of refugee Dwarves, a man named Calvin Hobbes. He did hid best to keep everybody calm and made sure that they had enough supplies and food to eat. A popular myth about Dwarves is that they can eat stone to survive, which is, of course, pure fiction. Calvin Hobbes found a huge natural cavern in the Rockies and set about working with the natural stone to make it more livable, and recruited others to help him. In just a few years they had carved out an entire city underground, complete with running water and sewage systems.

It was during this time that the Dwarven community decided that it needed some form of government in order to survive as a culture. In keeping with the Dwarves in fiction, they decided that a monarchy was the appropriate way to go, and unanimously voted to make Calvin Hobbes the King of the Dwarves. Luckily Calvin was a very level-headed and socially conscious individual who did not let the power of being declared king go to his head.

Calvin's first order of business was to organize the people and set up guilds for various professions, such as the stonemason's guild, where only the most skilled stoneworkers were accepted. He set up public services such as police and fire crews, as well as maintenance crews to maintain the cleanliness of their beloved city. IT was more than a year into his rule before his advisors finally convinced him that there was a need for a standing army for the defense of their fledgling kingdom. In addition to training Dwarves in military tactics, Calvin also negotiated a mutual protection pact with the Trolls to bolster both of their defense forces.
