The society of 2011 is not a very charitable or happy place. People typically go to work with their heads down and keep them that way while they are at work. Standing out is not considered a good thing. At work you might be considered a threat to a superior and dealt with accordingly. In your daily life, it often is taken as a sign that you are a conman or criminal attempting to hide in plain sight.
Nightclubs are an extremely popular way for the average wage slave to blow off steam. Nightclubs tend to be very loud with lots of bright lights and large dance floors. There is always plenty of seating. THe higher end clubs have private booths where people can do business in private, or get high, or whatever else might require privacy in a nightclub.
