Reavers

Reavers, or Suruin, are a form of supernatural entity and spirit in Juwonais folklore. In writing, they are commonly described as malevolent and self-serving beings that manipulate and use people for their personal gain. Reavers would latch onto a person, pollute their mind, drive them insane, and force them to commit heinous acts: they were said to gain power from absorbing and stealing the good qualities of a person, hence why they were described to drive people to commit murders and become psychotic. They were believed to be able to transform into their own human form and take control of other people they encountered. Reavers were often described to take the form of small, white, and faceless humanoids in their true forms. They were also commonly described to masquerade as goats, often stated to infiltrate a herd and then afflict the shepherd.   In early Juwonais history, reavers were thought to be the cause of freakish crimes and the source of a person's greed, bloodlust, etc. - thus, "cleansings" would often be performed on murderers and other violent criminals in order to rid them of any malevolent spirits. The belief was that this would return a person to their natural emotional and moral state, meaning they would confess out of guilt. Cleansing often involved using extreme heat, bloodletting, or scarification to kill the spirit. It would often take weeks, if not months, for the afflicted individual to confess to their crimes, after which they would receive punishment - usually execution or permanent maiming. Those who did not confess were often not executed as many feared executing a reaver-afflicted individual would free that spirit, letting it attach to another person. Rather, they would be imprisoned for some amount of time before being forcibly encased in clay and "fired" in a kiln. While inhumane, this was believed to trap the spirit permanently.
