Sebastian's Studies

“I was re-reading one of the old papers about multiverse theory, and I was pondering on how history could have been different if humans could cast spells too” Sebastian, chief of Clan Loiben scientific division, introduced himself while he set down his mess tray.
“This is not a conversation that makes any sense” Jeremy Loiben immediately grumbled, as he was already scarfing down the second course “You teach me that human biology is defined by the absence of organelles that other species like elves got through horizontal transfer or something like that… anyway, you would talk about something that’s not human anymore.”
“It’s not exactly like that but this is beyond the point” Sebastian replied with a sigh, he already explained him certain concepts dozens of times and he knew that insisting would have been pointless “it would a be minor change and I don’t think it would have had much influence. You are an example on how some powers arose spontaneously in the population…”
Jeremy mentally shut him up, he didn’t want his and his daughter Psionic abilities to become public knowledge. It’s not like the appearance of Psionic individuals among all species after the Disaster was a mystery or extremely rare, but he didn’t want it to change his reputation.
After a few seconds Sebastian resumed speaking: “Well, as in this universe us humans cannot cast spells autonomously, there could be universes in which humans could always do it and maybe elves or dwarves were in our condition and they invented the CAST.”
“I’m sure in this universe you and Efisin would keep hating each other” Sarah interrupted the conversation appearing behind his shoulders, making his father Jeremy chuckle. The child used to eavesdrop conversations and intervene when less expected, for her was natural to use her powers, having them since she was five. “Dad” she immediately diverted the chat “an ambassador from the Hillgrain has come, he brought up a few sheets of steel that we could use to reinforce the North walls, he said we can keep the pickup but… they need you.” “I’m coming, give me a minute” Jeremy replied immediately, picking up the remains of his launch, leaving Sebastian alone with his thoughts.

They were living that life for five years now, after the Dimensional Collapse. Like everyone else, Sebastian woke up without memories, surrounded by unrecognisable objects and the monstruous creatures from Hell, some of them were fighting angels and some assaulted the mortals. He survived by a miracle in those early days until he met Jeremy and Sarah, shattered after losing their loved ones by devils’ hands. Sebastian wasn’t good at fighting, and he didn’t know how to treat wounds, but he was at ease with the technology fragments. He understood how to operate laser guns and how to start cars, although his driving wasn’t the best, and he even managed to access an archive with information about the CAST. Sebastian called it “the great equalizer”, the tool that allowed every species to cast every type of magic, removing the natural limits. Sebastian dedicated most of his time studying it, the six Power Sources and how these interacted.
