Blood Fever
The Blood Fever was discovered in Barovia Proper by Dr. Valdimir Kanvelski, the mentor of Ireena Jahondathainian. It presented itself shortly before the party arrived after a series of disaapearances in the village.
Transmission & Vectors
The primary vector for infection is through blood to blood contact. This can be spread by wound exposure, bite, or scratches. When blood is mixed into water it can survive for an unknown amount of time, also acting as a waterborne vector.
Causes
The origin of the Blood Fever was determined to be an Adult Oblex. The local cleric Father Donavich was abducting villagers and travelers and feeding them to his son, who had been turned into a vampire spawn. The infected corpses were raised by a Bodak, who had been recently pulled into Barovia. The risen corpses were used to infect the Oblex, that then contaminated the water.
Symptoms
Stage One: Mild fever and joint pain. (1 - 2 days)
Stage Two: Extreme joint pain and a high fever, bleeding from the gums and fingernails begin. (1 -3 days)
Stage Three: Unconsciousness, seizures, and sweating blood. (1 - 3 days)
Stage Four: Death *Note from Ireena Jahondathainian: Corpses reanimate after 1 - 16 hours. Unique type of zombie, severed limbs continue to move after being removed. Excessive damage or fire is required to kill the creature.
Treatment
If treatment is started early enough (Stage one symptoms) with proper medicine and fluids there is a 50% chance of recovery.
It was later discovered that magical healing from a divine source can reverse even Stage 3. Fluids and medicine are still required during recovery, but this is an effective method to cure an infected.
Prevention
Medical protective equipment is required when interacting with any infected, plague masks are required after stage two with cotton, rosemary, sage, and garlic packed into the filtration cavity.
