Small Earthquake Hits Lower Quags Dockside; Mysterious Debris Recovered

Dateline: Khazigur Quags West, Dockside; 23 Typhoneth's month, 12089: A localized tremor shook the shantytown structures of the lower Quags in the west Dockside this afternoon, when an earthquake rattled through the district and created a significant sea wave pushing south across the bay. Wizards' College Earth Elementalists suggest the cause was not the evil machinations of the denizens of the underdark, nor the motion of any great world-serpent, but rather a collapse inside an undersea cave that compressed and then released a large amount of air.   Damage in the quags is unknown and, for obvious reasons, difficult to estimate, but several two and three story clapboard structures appear to have been damaged. Ships at anchor in the south docks, including the Imperial Frigate Sky Dragon and a Minonoise grain freighter, Jonquil, were lifted by the wave and suffered minor buffeting damage but no serious harm.   Soon after the eruption, odd items were found washed up on the beach, including a waterlogged, life-sized doll, several suits of chewed-looking gnome and halfling leather armor, and a cleverly made articulated wooden snake several feet in length, suggesting to authorities that perhaps a smuggler's cave or hoard of stolen goods taken by the Yellow Fingers or some other pickpocketing or thieving gang had collapsed in the tremor. Authorities are retaining these items until their origin, proper ownership, and reason for washing up on the beach can be found; and the Varangian home guard asks citizens to please turn in any items so found, to help in the ongoing investigation.   Reports of an enormous, hardshelled, tentacled monster swimming quickly out to sea from the area of the collapse could not be substantiated. A myth known to former generations regarding the lair of the Ancient Blue Dragon Thornugordonon in the same general region may have more to do with these reports than any actual monster. No danger is posed to the people of the Quags or the citizens of the city by any monster, or by these events.
