Ring of Transportation Item in Cumae: The Orbis | World Anvil

Ring of Transportation

A most prized object among teamsters and logistics folk is the Ring of Transportation, which is not to be confused with a ring of teleportation.   A ring of transportation has 3 daily charges which allow for the transformation of people and items within a 20' radius into a bubble of semi-astral material, which can then be moved by the mental wishes of the owner of the ring using rapid - but not instantaneous - movement of 900 feet per round or about 2 miles per minute. The bubble travels at a height of 300' off the ground. Items inside the bubble are not visible to those outside; items and people in the bubble lose their solidity for the duration and cannot affect or be affected by exterior forces in any way, even when travelling through water, trees, other creatures or any other material. Only the owner can see anything outside of the bubble and even then only a growing brightness in the direction of motion as the destination becomes nearer; it's just a gray astral fog to everyone else. A soft breeze filters through the bubble from the direction of travel but no inertia or centrifugal forces are in effect.   Inside the bubble, local physics still hold true; clothes don't disappear, a person can toss a ball up and catch it. The bubble is a tiny semporous pocket dimension that slips along and between the fully material one. As it is semiporous, it does not destroy bags of holding or attract the attention of astral creatures; people inside the bubble can see and interact with each other as normal but the outside world is just a haze. It can likewise be stored inside a bag of holding if desired. The bubble takes more of a dome than spherical shape, with a base the size of the lifted area, 40' across and 20' high.   The hard weight limit for the materials included is 2,000 pounds; the owner determines which objects are meant to be ncluded and which are not, so that a pair of shoes might be taken along but the water in a puddle or the stones on the ground are not. Once the ring reaches its weight limit, other items are left behind, determined randomly by the DM.   The down side is that it takes a full twenty minutes for the effect to spin up, and that in practice it's more like a very slow teleport than something perceived as motion through space; scholars claim that it is in effect no different than a mathematical calculation to teleport from point a to point b, except that the points in between are technically traversed, but no interaction of any kind can occur.   Rings of Transportation are highly prized and usually found by members of the Transport Union, where they are employed to move platoons of troops and horse as well as materials to and from the fluid front lines of the War in the West.   Destinations can be changed mid-flight, but having reached the destination a charge is spent. An additional charge and 20 more minutes to reset the semiporous bubble are required to begin another journey. All three charges reset at midnight local to wherever the ring is at that time.   This item does not require attunement, but it must be worn to be used and the wearer controls the behavior and destination of the bubble.
