The Scroll

Whether the Scroll was named after the act of scrolling through a screen, the fact the device rolls up to be more compact, or its resemblance to the archaic means of capturing something (such as a spell), it has become an integral part of galactic society all the same. Personal communication devices have been around since long before the dawn of the empire, even entanglement-based communications were possible, albeit not fast enough to be useful on a societal scale. It took the discovery of Hyperspace, and the The Net it enables, for devices such as the scroll to take off on a galaxy-wide scale.
While the inner workings of the device were a trade-secret for thousands of year, its build patterns were eventually leaked and, as such, the Scroll became available to even those with but a few UPB's to spare. The most stellar feature of any Scroll, however, remains its capability to link up with other technologies; from connecting to personal comms units, to hacking into corporate networks, to remotely reloading a starship's weapons while planetside; as long as a Scroll can get a stable connection, it can communicate.
Access & Availability
The plans are widely available, with the most basic types costing as few as 10 UPB's
Complexity
By modern standards, the device relatively simple.
