Hyperspace
"Hyperspace", while once seen as one plane, is these days used as a catch-all for the construct of The Void, The Warp and The Drift. These regions are distinct in many ways, but the backdrop for all regions of hyperspace is the same; a blackness that seems unnaturally deep, interrupted by pockets of The Membrane. Said darkness is highly dangerous to sentient beings, who often go mad from 'peering into the abyss' too long; they develop Void Sickness. The pockets of Membrane, however, leak many forms of pure energy, creating void winds, void currents and void turbulence phenomena. Using advanced computation, these currents and winds can be used to 'carry' a ship (or information, in the case of hyper-communications) towards a gravity well much faster than conventional, slower-than-light travel. This, combined with Interstellar Gate-based system-to-system jumps, makes getting from planet A to planet B take hours/days, instead of many lifetimes, to accomplish. This drastic, effective shortening of galactic distances ushered in a golden age, and to this day is at the backbone of most everyone's daily life.
