FTL Drives
The category of 'FTL drive' encompasses any device which enables a mass to traverse the universe at a speed exceeding c (~= 3*10-8), the speed of light. These include:
- Translation drives - The most common and cheapest current way to travel; by creating a stable wormhole, this drive 'translates' a mass to hyperspace from where the light-speed barrier can be broken with reference to material space.
- Jump drives - Working on the principle of dimensionally-entagled quanta and technomancy, these devices are meant to instantly teleport between locations when linked to a jump beacon. As of current, however, they are very experimental and unstable; the only functional ones are mere prototypes
- Rip drives - Rip drives are the oldest form of FTL drive. They 'tunnel' through normal space to a nearby gravity well by drastically bending and reshaping spacetime. They can only break the light-speed barrier on contact with high concentrations of dark matter (such as on 'hyperspace lanes'), and their speed is proportional to the density of said matter.
