Orthodoxy

The Orthodox presence in Crossroads began 1834, as an outraged response to the Chinese Daoists making a claim to the Kazakhs. The Russians followed in their footsteps by making a call for control via religious proxy, resulting in the Russian Orthodox Church claiming that the Retribution Wastes could only be healed by Christian hands. This lead to caravans of Orthodox followers flocking to the area, bankrolled by the Russian government. They funded the creation of the Cathedral of Penitent Salvation within Crossroads Proper, which the city was later built around.

Since arriving in the region, the Orthodox have quarreled with the Daoists and their strange practices, often coming to blows over the massive differences in race and religion. They see themselves as the leaders of the city, and while they permit the establishment of Daoist living spaces and temples, they are strictly against most other religious organizations who try and create a foothold in Crossroads Proper. Racial and religious violence is commonplace, and while racial segregation is not directly enforced in the city, it is an unspoken agreement in most Orthodox establishments.

The majority of the Orthodox live within the city limits, though there is the occasional Orthodox farm or hamlet. The population is primarily made up of laborers, though there are a large amount of Orthodox mercenary groups that are often contracted by the church to provide protection and enforce the law within the city.

Structure

The Orthodox are much more coordinated than any other religious group in Crossroads, and like all Orthodox are headed by the Patriarch of Constantinople. Within the area, they are led by a council of head priests, with lower-ranking priests being the ones who do sermons, teach, and run various church sponsored organizations. These include the mercenaries forces employed for protection and beast hunting, as well as social services like mess halls that give their followers a place to eat.
