The man who met the deities

After he led the population of the Old World to Etria, he fell into a deep sleep where he met the deities of the world, proving their existence. And so he communed with them for a while, yet there were still doubters, until the time came where they told him that to spread their word he would have to spill blood, his blood
— The Scriptures of Wills
The man who met the deities is a man of unremembered name who first spoke to the deities whilst leading the population of the Old World to Etria. It is thought that as he did what they wished they would reveal themselves to the population for the first time, replacing the belief in the Old Deities that many people used to believe in.

Summary

A long time ago the population of Etria was living in another part of Hieterra, but was forced out due to an uprising. When they landed on the other side of the Great Ocean they were in Etria, a new nation of their own on the edge of the continent of Zioris. where the true deities were able to finally reveal themselves as their power was free of the influence of the false deities. The deities are said to have communicated through the unknown man, who conversed with them and told his followers about how they should worship the deities.   When the Church of Mopharity replaced the old religions there were originally many people who did not trust the words of this man, even though he was speaking for the deities and this therefore means they were commiting blasphemy. After several years of teaching the population, both the native Dwarves and Elves, as well as the new Human population, of the true deities, there were still many non believers, who had to be convinced somehow. The man turned to the deities the next time he dream-walked with them, and asked how he could convince them of the truth. Thycdar, the deity of death, told him that the only way to do so would be to kill himself, allowing his word to spread wider from the point where he killed himself. The man walked to Si city, a well known dwarf and human town, where he disemboweled himself.   He was then carried to Windhelm , which was a border town, and buried in the tomb by the Emporer. The elves native to the nearby Oaroafaoasmoa witnessed this, and it is thought that through his death and buriel being seen by these three species the truth of the Church of Mopharity was spread throughout Etria.

Historical Basis

There is evidence that it happened, as the body of the man is buried in The Tomb at Windhelm.

Spread

This is the known truth of the Etrian population, but in other nations the legend is kept hidden as they keep their populations in the dark about the true deities.

Variations & Mutation

In some versions, the man had to proove to the deities that he was really trying to spread their word. Another version says that instead of disboweling himself he starved himself and yet another says he gutted himself. Other variations mention forming a new ethnic group.   One possibly badly translated Elvish record claims that the people were 'doing a bad word'.

Cultural Reception

Outside of Etria, the believers of the false deities treat it as a mythical event as they believe that this is not how deities work.   The Etrian Armed Forces will disembowel themselves in a similar way should they be captured.
