Manipulation: Vocal

"Are you serious? Why aren't you calling off the play?" Rigana folded her arms. "You can't possibly have a play that has only one actor."   "We can. You're a magus. I know you can cast that voice-change spell to sound like different people. Just read off all the lines." The producer got on his knees, hands clasped together. "Please! I'm lost if tonight's play doesn't go off! I don't have enough florins on hand to repay tonight's ticket sales!"   The wizard sighed. "And that's my problem, how? Besides, I only know my lines. What, am I going to be holding the entire stageplay while out there alone under the candlelight?"   "A new type of play. The audience won't know any better." The producer took his hat off with a nervous gesture and wiped the sweat from his brow, still on his knees. "I will be in your debt, I swear it Rigana, I just need something to happen tonight."   The wizard glanced out from backstage. The amphitheatre was starting to fill in. She frowned. "Okay. Hand me the play and I'll figure this out."   "My thanks, my many thanks." The producer handed over the sheaf and quickly retreated to start adjusting the stage lighting. Rigana thumbed through the play, stopping at a random page. She coughed before holding a hand to her throat. She began to speak, voice husky and low, deepened by her magecraft.   "I am Lex Argus, Nautilus Hunter of the Eastern Tradewinds. My companion, Lady Suvirre." She coughed again and adjusted the finger on her throat.   "Suvirre of the House of Blacktide, at your service." Her voice was suddenly much higher, far higher than her natural speaking voice, with a musical lilt. Rigana coughed again.   "Well, this will have to do. Hope they don't throw stuff at me while I'm onstage..."

Effect

Magical manipulation is a standard magic effect, in this case used on the caster's own vocal cords. The amount of magical power required is miniscule, as adjusting the vocal cords even slightly produces the desired effect of raising or lowering one's voice. A trained wizard can typically maintain a changed voice indefinitely on their own stamina, though doing so over very long periods of time has been known to permanently alter the vocal cords.

Side/Secondary Effects

One discovery of Etoilean magic is that the more powerful the wizard, the less fine-tuned control they have over extremely small applications of magical power. Wizards with an unusually high amount of magical stamina and output are typically unable to cast this effect meaningfully, as they run the risk of either forcing their own vocal cords and windpipe shut, or forcing them so wide open as to cause internal bleeding in the neck.

Manifestation

A wizard merely holds their finger to their neck next to their vocal cords and channels a tiny amount of power into them, to adjust their position and orientation and change the tone of their voice.

Source

This spell is sufficiently weak enough to be cast simply from a wizard's own stamina reserves.

Discovery

This manipulation appeared in the standard mage's textbook in the Grand Etoilean Academy, and most wizards cite it as where they learned the spell. Typical rumor is that the spell was likely researched by a spy in service to the Principality of Etoile, due to its many uses in subterfuge.
