The gem in the centre of the axe head is created with a magic that bonds the weapon to the current user, allowing for it to return to the hand of the wielder after it has been left or thrown. The entire axe is covered with an enchantment which makes it lighter to hold, while still being able to deal the same damage it would have previously. This allowed the axe to be wielded by smaller species like gnomes and halflings.
History
When the now-famed warrior, Merric Highill, first rode into battle during the War of the Split he wielded a simple wood cutting axe. After many years of fighting the god Peylore realised the worth of this soldier so, with the help of skilled and divine smiths, he crafted a magical weapon from Merric's axe.
During the final battle of the War of the Split, the Battle of the Midlands, history stated that a great giant killed Merric and his axe was lost in the great waves that followed. It was only after 30 years did the adventuring party, the Knights of Braveheart, discover an island off the coast of Edel which had many stranded riders from Merric's division. And with their leader, Merric's cousin Norman Highill, was the axe, now a little rusted.
