Tremere Secrets

Why so secretive? The Tremere are known for their secrecy. Revealing clan secrets is one of the highest crimes amongst the Tremere, and even activity that can lead to compromises in knowledge about the clan is unacceptable. At the very least, such behavior leads to demotion. At the very worst, it results in the Kindred's death. Why are things this way? House Tremere is a clan built on some very large and very bad lies. The Council of Seven expects all of their allies to turn on them in a moment, and is prepared to deal with it. And hell if they are going to allow one of their grandchilder to compromise any information that might reveal a weakness or a strength to their would-be enemies. So, secrecy is tantamount. Revealing anything about the Tremere Clan's structure, society, traditions, ritual, resources, or abilities is not acceptable - especially the limitations and abilities of Thaumaturgy.

Outsiders

When confronted by outsiders about the details of their clan, Tremere are expected to be vague. They do not announce that they follow someone's orders "because he is an Apprentice of a higher circle of mystery than I am." They simply say something such as "that is how we do things" and avoid saying anything else on the matter. If a nosy Kindred presses, a Tremere is expected to assert he has no intention of speaking further on the matter, and if that fails, to leave or ignore the rude party. Remember, even using the word 'Regent' in public is considered a faux paus.

Thaumaturgy

Thaumaturgy is particularly protected. In the event of any great war between the clans or sects, Thaumaturgy is the great Tremere trump card, since it is a power that even the eldest of many clans are unfamiliar with its breadth, scope and all its possibilities. Tremere never perform Thaumaturgy blatantly unless they have no other choice than Final Death, and even then, they try to be subtle about it, and they often refuse to acknowledge the event even happened later. When they are forced to express that they may have a useful magickal ability, they never specify exactly what they can do. A Tremere encountering a sample of strange blood would ask for it "because he may be able to do something with it later", and trust in the reputation of the Tremere for such things to convince the other party to hand it over. He certainly wouldn't detail what he could possibly tell from that blood, or how he would do it exactly.

Wizards Behaving Badly

Here is a list of other examples of bad behavior on the part of a Tremere, just to give you an idea of how serious they take this.
  • Giving out details of the Tremere Code, the Tremere ranking system or initiation rites to another Kindred.
  • Revealing the location of the Chantry or any of its defenses.
  • Having an intimate relationship with another Kindred. Emotional entanglements to anything other than House and Clan is instantly suspicious.
  • Teaching lores or giving out information on the occult to non-Tremere without the permission of the Regent.
  • The list could go on, but just keep in mind how insular the Tremere are, and their reasons for doing so.
