Tagger

In this new age of arcanum where people are discovering their exposure to residual Ley energy or even Ley Blood has awoken magical gifts in some of the population, and the massive increase in the number of new apprentice wizards enrolling in academy now that the Penta Caelum is ruling over Creatos, the necessity for a means of monitoring and even regulating the use of magic in certain populated areas became quite apparent.   When a rogue cantrip could send the village up in flame, it became paramount to instill a strict set of rules about magic use when within city limits. Those without magical boons found it comforting that something was being done to wrangle the youth who could now wield fire in their hands, while those with gifts felt they were being put under the boot of those in charge as to not have their authority tested. No one was wrong.   Leadership found a solution.  Select artificers, now known as Taggers, were enlisted (and generously compensated) to fill their professional time with manufacturing bracelets with very specific purposes.  The bracelets, called arclets, colloquially known as leashes or muzzles, would mark and register the casting of any spell by the caster.  Every incantation leaves a certain residue behind, a thumbprint of sorts.  This band would detect, and record, each spell performed by its registered practitioner. Anyone who performed illegal or unsanctioned spells within city limits was subject to varying levels of punishment, airing on the heavy handed as to create sufficient incentive as to not breach the law.   While oppressive, many thought the measures were responsible and reasonable.  The disparity in destructive potential from a commoner versus a spell-wielding malcontent was substantial.  With so many people living in close proximity, it was very important to make sure that some level of peace and order was maintained and that there was a very visible method of enforcing it.   These artificers poured their efforts into finding the most efficient way to track, store, and sometimes even restrict the casting of spells via a bracelet that was bound to its wearer once donned. Creating one such artifact was a daunting task.  Creating hundreds required visionaries.     Once the path to creation was viable the boundaries were tested.  Could they be somehow monitored remotely? Could one inlay magical suppression? Could said suppression be increased and/or decreased at someone else's discretion?  The requests were endless.  These Taggers' skills were put to the absolute test.   Tested they may have been, but known there were also.  Carrying the title of a Tagger meant many things.  To some, you were a protector of the realm. To others, you were a sell-out oppressor.  To all, you were powerful.

I absolutely loved how you provided some background info to the world that explains succinctly just how dangerous magic is and why Taggers are needed in this world. And the ending was both chilling and impactful. It's really easy to see how this could be a controversial profession. Is it possible for an artificer to refuse to become a Tagger? Who are the really famous or infamous Taggers? This was a delight to read, and leaves room for so many possibilities.
