Lymot

Lymot is one of the nations of Silceris. It is the home of the Melsari, the elven natives of this swampland rainforest. The region is filled with great inland waterways and impenetrable swamps. Outsiders who dare enter the lush and dense swampy forest that rule this region might find themselves lost. If they are lucky, they might find a way out or a way in and come upon the largest plateaued region of the continent. It is called "Abay'Arkeleron" or "the Roots of Arceleron".

Melsari thrive in the foreboding swamps of Lymot, a lush and threatening land teeming with poisonous plants and violent venomous predators. The region's largely stable tropical climate lends its plants the capacity to overturn all attempts to cultivate them. Foreign agricultural, colonial, and commercial ventures beyond the borders have met with abject failure. The native Melsari organize themselves on the tribal level with success and efficiency. The larger cities that are scattered throughout the southernmost part are home to many noble families. These families vie for power at every possibility and rivalry between those houses is not uncommon. Even though there's a lot of intranational struggle, there is a great sense of unity among them. Their sense of motherland often overshadows their individual take on things.

Structure

There are several possibilities that could be the ruling body on Lymot. One of the possibilities is the Zefwi-Mortra who seemed to be in charge of Lymot since the Third Deathmarch. Possibly a political faction in Lymot that was part of the invasion of Aeloth. Since there are references to the Meslari King and a Melasri Royal Court, this might be the central governing body.

Another possibility is that the Menletists are in control of the government in some way, or at least have an influence in it. Otherwise, its role is unknown.
The only known governing structure of the country is the Noble houses that make the day to day decisions.

Culture

Very little is known about the Melsari culture as of the Third Era. The difficult terrain within Lymot, coupled with the apparent isolationist policies of the Melsari, renders this largely a mystery. It is known that great emphasis is placed upon the Menletists, the strange trees that are abundant in the Swamps. Even what little is known about the Menletists is the subject of much rumor and speculation. It is believed that the Melsari are somehow co-dependent upon the trees, though how and why are still being researched.

Melsari culture in Lymot is not fully understood. Some evidence suggests that, like the Tar'Sypher, the Melsari lifestyle is tribal. However, considering references to the Royal Court of Lymot and the existence of the Marsh Spectres, the presence of some form of organized Melsari government is very likely. In the past, the Melsari had a large and powerful enough civilization to build large, intricate pyramid structures called Leghs-Kavrentaps. Yet because of the cultural degradation done by the Meldari, they came to building small villages with mud huts. The Leghs-Kavrentaps are left as uninhabited ruins scattered throughout Lymot.

The Melsari are a very insular people. This is due to the nature of their homeland, but also because men and mem typically view them as little more than barbarians. Their long history of being betrayed has made the Melsari very distrustful of strangers, but when a Melsari has made a friend, they will fight to the death to defend that friend.

History

The region presently known as Lymot was once part of a much greater landmass within the domain of the Hist, but the greater part of the region was flooded during the wanderings of the humanoid Mel races. The aboriginal came to inhabit Lymot in small, preliterate communities by the early Founding Era.
At some point, the Melsari developed a unique civilization that inexplicably collapsed long before their first encounters with the other races of Silceris. A number of forgotten Melsari tribes constructed countless elaborate stone structures across Lymot, ranging from solitary statues and Wayshrines to sprawling stepped pyramids known as "Leghs-Kavrentaps". While the purpose of many of these structures, as well as the techniques used to carve and build them, have long been lost to history, many of these structures have been identified to be shrines erected in both reverence to and fear of Kor'Yorag, such as the Mouth of Yorag in central Laefèn or the forbidden vaults beneath the Anaxsû-phyr ruins in southern Vithveni.

It is wholly unknown how or why this ancient Melsari civilization disappeared, and the apparent disparity between its enduring, elegant stonework and the makeshift, bulbous mud structures and thatch houses that many subsequent Melsari tribes adopted has perplexed scholars. The mysterious event that caused this collapse has come to be known as the Fall of Melsari High Culture, which brought about a plethora of changes for Melsari civilization.

Founding Era

Little is known of the ancient history of the Melsari during this Era, following the events of the Founding Era. Largely removed from Silceris' history during the Middle Founding Era, Melsari society was supposedly at its height during this time period; having an advanced civilization that built the great Leghs-Kavrentaps pyramids of Lymot. Mysteriously, sometime near the First Era, the Leghs-Kavrentaps society was wiped out from unknown causes. Possible blame for this may rest with the catastrophic events of the Valindrian Wars, but no one really knows.

Demography and Population

Lymot generally has a southerly marsh-like climate along with the florae and faunae that would be associated with such an environment. Turelian's Account suggests a climate similar to that of Nesseri Naga'Thus, the swampy region in Southern Aldevaria, though with denser vegetation and less hospitable wildlife. The most prominent residents of Lymot are the Melsari.

Military

The Zefwi-Mortra may be a military faction in Lymot.
During the invasion of the Tar'Vesnyr, two legions of raider units known as Purgers assisted the Aurelian and Tar'Sypher forces in turning the tide of the Tar'Vensyr Invasion. It is unknown if they continued to exist into the Third Era.

Marsh Specters are Melsari, born under the Ritual of Kor'Yorag in Lymot. They are trained from childhood in the art of stealth and combat. Marsh Specters serve their country as assassins. They have historically been used by the ancient Kings and lords of Lymot as a means to end conflicts and wars without major bloodshed.

The city of Krukas' Refuge was known to employ a guard unit of non-Melsari called Tygaks or "Foreigner" in Darionic.

Foreign Relations

Lymot have no true allies among the other nations of Silceris. Most relations are neutral, with Meslari not really caring about the affairs of other races or nations. The only clear relations they have are mixed, falling on the Meldari and the Aurelians.
An uneducated person would expect that the Melsari and the Tar'Sypher would be the closest of allies, given their somewhat unique status as tribal civilizations and their similar histories of being used others. However, the Melsari despise the Feral Elves of Vuz'Syphera just as the Tar'Sypher, in turn, hate the Melsari. The roots of this animosity can be traced to the Tar'Sypher belief that a Meslari Sorcerer was responsible for creating the Thusian Plague which plagued the species and its infrastructure. Each race sees the other as vastly inferior to themselves.

Trade & Transport

Lymot continues to be a "backward" land economically by general standards. Most of the agriculture is grown by subsistence farmers, though recently more has been shipped abroad. The trade however is not very successful as the produce normally arrives to the foreign markets rotten, for it takes a tremendously long time for the goods to get to the market. Enormous investments attempting to improve the trade routes of Lymot have yielded very little success.

Lord Sudrith Alveon, a wealthy trader, was the first to invest. At that time, it took three weeks for the rice and root he was importing to arrive, half-rotten, in Herald's Dusk. Now, decades later and despite millions of gold invested, the time to get to market has increased. It now takes two and a half months for goods, now thoroughly rotten, to arrive.
