Mothera Species in Crauwlacha | World Anvil

Mothera (Maa·thera)

Mothera are a somewhat rare, recently discovered sapient species. Despite their scarcity, you'll spot a Mothera right away with their bright personalities... and even brighter apparel.

Mothera seem to joyfully revel in their lives without fear of death, knowing everyone's time comes eventually... And it's a liiittle bit too easy to get cocky you'll survive what life throws at you when you live in constant omenwork. Either way, many can certainly stand to take a page out of the book of the Mothera.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Mothera are a bipedal, hexapodal species of moths. They are extremely fluffy, from their bodies to their big, feather-like antenna! They also tend to be stout-looking, thanks to their dusty 'fluff', and also possess huge eyes.

Mothera's hands have four fingers, while their feet have three toes; each digit ends in a rather subtle claw built for clinging. They have four big wings, the top two being known as forewings while the bottom are hindwings

Genetics and Reproduction

Mothera will lay fertilized eggs after coupling with a partner, a typical brood having up to 10 eggs. Not every egg will hatch typically, usually 3-to-5 out of the entire brood, but there are very rare instances where each one lives. These eggs will incubate for five months before hatching.

Growth Rate & Stages

Mothera are born as little grubs, about a foot long in length, and stay that way for about ~2 years. Sometime after their third birthday, they will spin a cocoon and grow inside of it for a week.

After they emerge from their cocoon, they enter their nymph stage. During their early nymphhood, Mothera are somehow even fuzzier compared to their adult forms. It's quite absurd, in all honesty!

As per all species in Crauwlacha, Mothera become adults at age 18! This is to avoid any messy age issues.

Ecology and Habitats

Mothera can and will live anywhere, as would any sapient species. However, they are most commonly found in (and evolved for) the misty forests and ghostly clearings of the Spectra Archipelago, home to the Prime Plane.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Mothera evolved from Nectarivores, but as they grew they began to transition into Frugi-Nectarivore hybrids. However, let us be clear that nowadays, as sapient beings, they can eat whatever they like.

Modern Motheras seem to have quite the sweet tooth! They adore sodas, candies, and anything involving fruity tastes.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Aside from 'typical' modern expectations, in their native home Mothera are often found in nomadic groups known as Eclipses. An Eclipse is lead by the individual(s) with the best disaster sense out of them all, though these leaders are less of the powerful kind and more just navigators. All Mothera in an Eclipse have just as much power as the other.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Mothera, aside from standard sensory capabilities, can see both in the dark and ultra-violet light. They also have a great sense of smell, despite the lack of a nose, and can sense residual magic in an area.

Mothera also have the unique sensory ability to sense 'bad vibes' in an area, known as their Disaster Sense or Omens. The Disaster Sense can feel if something bad is going to happen in the general area, allowing them to make themselves scarce or be more critical of their surroundings.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Mothera first names typically relate to omens, celestial bodies, or magical properties. Newly hatched Mothera in traditional Eclipses are often presented to the leader, who will then divine an omen to suggest a name to the new parent.

Mothera last names relate to which Eclipse you descend from, even for Mothera which don't live in one. The only deviations from this formula would be adopted Mothera, or Mothera who married non-Mothera partners.

Mothera First Names: Wingbeat, Blood Moon, Oberon, Red Giant
Mothera Last Names: Lunae, Atlasa, Cinnaba, Rosymap

Courtship Ideals

Mothera court their partners by writing poems, often worded like a prophecy, and/or will sing them beautiful ballads. If the other accepts, they write their own poem or ballad about how much they love the other and that they'd be blessed to live their life with them.

History

The Mothera people descended from simple moths who had made their way to the archipelago, likely during migratory behavior. Exposed to the immense magic that comes from the Prime Plane, Mothera's ancestors rapidly evolved into the magically inclined and sapient beings they are today.

Ancient Mothera, surely confused by this newfound awareness and big bodies, stuck together in their Eclipses. Together, these nomadic families began to expand across the archipelago and learned more about the dead creatures or people that also lived there. The more they interacted with these ghosts, the more Mothera began to develop and hone their current day abilities.

Mothera remained isolated for many, many years, as did their home, until the first group besides the natives found the Spectra Archipelago. Fast forward a few thousand years and Mothera have spread beyond their native home. Many stay within the archipelago, but just as many also live across the globe within other communities.
