Dragonborn Species in Crauwlacha | World Anvil

Dragonborn (Dra·gn·born)

Dragonborn are a very diverse bunch of people, from colors to culture. Miraculously descended from the great flying giants, Dragonborn take pride and confidence in their heritage and their place in the world.

Many Dragonborn are seen as intimidating by others, and unfortunately many are judged by the color of their scales due to their ancestors; especially so for Chromatic Dragonborn. In reality, unlike their ancestors, Dragonborn aren't easily puzzled out by just a glance at the hues of their scales.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragonborn are bipedal, tetrapodal descendants of dragons. The way they stand is either plantigrade or a rather subtle digitigrade. They have horns and all manner of spikes, all up to the designer of course!

Dragonborn can have hair or hair-like spikes/frills. They can also have frills and tails at their designer's leisure. Some Dragonborn may also bare wings, albeit very rarely.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragonborn will be pregnant with their young for about one month, then lay clutches of eggs of typically 1-3 in size. These eggs continue to incubate for eight more months before hatching.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dragonborn don't age much different from other species in Crauwlacha! As per all other species, they reach adulthood at age 18! This is to avoid any messy age issues.

However, this is where Dragonborn diverge from other species. They may continue to grow in size until they reach around age 34! This can lead to many varying heights for different Dragonborn.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dragonborns come from Omnivores and Mesocarnivore. As a sapient species, they can eat pretty much anything they want, but most do include at least some kinds of meat in their diet for varying reasons.

Biological Cycle

Many Dragonborn will often slow down around the colder seasons (at least, when actually exposed to the cold.) Some may choose to go into a pseudo-hibernative state, and some don't. The only exceptions to this would be Dragonborn with cold breath weapons/ancestry.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dragonborn, aside from standard sensory capabilities, have a great sense of eyesight. It's not too pronounced, but they tend to be less prone to requiring glasses and may see things farther away than their human companions.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Dragonborn first names, also known as personal names, are often draconic in nature, but some are also draconic corruptions of common language names. Despite being 'first' names, these names are actually often put behind their Clan's name as a mark of honor.
Dragonborn that were exiled from their Clan may adopt traditional last names instead, however not all do this.

Dragonborn will also be given nicknames, also known as drakehood names, by their clanmates. These names are used endearingly, and typically are descriptive of attributes they had or things they like to do.

Dragonborn Personal Names: Edynta, Hymma, Kava, Sirse (Female)
Cathon, Patrin, Nayrri, Omrod (Male) Kriv, Jemar, Omoalth, Apa (Neutral)
Dragonborn Drakehood Names: Weaver, Clever, Loudmouth, Swimmer
Dragonborn Clan Names: Norixius, Lorhowle, Goldmykir, Ne'turq

Courtship Ideals

Dragonborn court one another by getting their desired partner gifts for their hoard. It's seen as deeply personal, both either romantically or platonically, to give someone a gift they'll hold onto and protect for all their lives.

Many Dragonborn will also paint their scales to look pretty to their beloveds, or just for fun! If it's for the first situation, the colors they paint themselves will typically be the partner's own scale colors, their favorite colors, or a complementary color to their mate.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Dragonborn live in Clans. These Clans often span entire settlements, or an entire section of city or suburb for scale. They are tightly knit and view each other as family, even if they aren't related by blood. Dragonborn take immense pride with their Clan, looking to uphold their honor and earn their keep within the Clan.

Traditionally, Clans will exile any member who brings dishonor to them. Also traditionally, Clans typically would not accept non-Dragonborn into their Clans. However, more and more Clans have decided to drop such harsh rules and instead focus on caring for their own... Not all, though, as unfortunately many do continue to stay in the past.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Due to their draconic ancestry, Dragonborn have a natural hoarding instinct. This has evolved into a tradition where most, if not all, Dragonborns will maintain a small, medium, or large collection of objects they like. This can include things such as gemstones, paintbrushes, or plants! All that matters is the Dragonborn feels an attachment to the object.

They will then hoard and protect these little items for the rest of their lives. Losing anything in a hoard is likely to upset the Dragonborn; if they were unlucky enough to lose most or all of their hoard, they may even begin to mourn.

Something less talked about by non-Dragonborn is the fact this hoarding instinct also applies to all their friends. Any friend or family a Dragonborn may possess will be subject to the fierce instincts in their brains to protect and take care of them.

History

Dragonborn have been around for a long time, meaning their concrete history is somewhat muddled. The only real way we'd get a concrete answer would to be find a dragon somehow old enough to remember it, or to ask the gods.

One story, more folklore than real theory, was that a draconic god looked upon certain special dragon eggs and blessed them to produce the first Dragonborn in their own image. This story has been around long enough that this god's true name has faded from the myth and many different people have now bestowed upon them many new names.

Another theory, seen as most likely by scientists of the present, is that Dragonborn came from the unlikely union of a dragon and humanoid species. While slightly unknown how in the world this coupling occurred, though theorized to involve some kind of magic, this seems to have the most logic and even fossil evidence supporting it.
