The Arts in the Ender Realm

Enderian culture does not have much in the way of material goods to gift freely anymore, so they instead focus on their thoughts, feelings and time as gifts in the meantime. This mentality is certainly reflected in their arts, as they especially adore song and written endeavors, predominately prose poetry and short stories.   Magic and technology are intertwined throughout Enderian culture, and that notion continues to pervade the Enderian arts as well.

Song

Music in the Ender Realm is typically soft strings and haunting chords with an electric twinge, especially in songs with lyrics. Songs without lyrics generally have instruments that almost seem to sing themselves, always imparting heavy emotions onto the listener to parse through throughout the song.   Songs with lyrics have a heavy focus on the lyrics to impart emotions, and the music is supplementary. Most songs are sung acapella, if they have any backing at all, simply due to the limited amount of instruments that are accessible on a regular basis. Due to the lack of backing music, most Enderians are quite good singers in their native language just from practice and repetition. Those who are performers have learned how to sing in multiple languages in a similar style and specialize in a specific instrument that was either passed down through their family or they invented it themselves.   A lot of Enderian music is quite experimental, always pushing to find ways to draw out music from the items around them through technological or magical means. But what stays true is the songwriter's message is always genuine; most serious singers write their own songs as well for added integrity.   The majority of songs tend to have a theme of community, perseverance or adoration.   Outsiders have dubbed many Enderian pieces "soliloquies set to song", long internal monologues voiced and aired in order for the singer to parse through and the listeners to better understand them. While some mean this as an insult, Enderians accept it for the compliment they know it to be. There is no higher compliment than knowing that you expressed yourself in such an open manner to the point where others feel they know your mind.   Love songs in particular are especially poetry-like and are usually individualized to the songwriter's beloved; they are also performed more personally, usually not for a large crowd outside of those the lovers know and respect. Duets are even more personal, and demonstrate a deep connection between the two singers, especially if they cowrote the song.

Written Works

While official Enderian records are often formal, concise, and straightforward, works of fiction are generally recognizable by their elegant and extravagant vocabulary and winding prose.   Poetry specifically is a favored form of expression among Enderians, as it allows freedom of expression and exploration of the self and harder-to-grasp concepts.   As with music and song, Enderian works of writing are also highly experimental and rarely structured the same across different genres, or even from creator to creator. Some of the more unique works scatter words about on the page and number each word, drawing a picture out of the connected sentences. Another unique style involves scribing the words onto puzzle pieces in order for the target audience to physically assemble.   There are always new ways authors try to meld their scribing with magic as well, either through using a specific medium, specific instruments used to write, or varied presentation technologies. Magical paper or display surfaces are the most common way magic is melded into writing, allowing words and phrases to be demonstrated as images to those who speak another language.
