Bone

Divine Domains: Water, War, Travel, Protection, Weather, Magic
Symbol: Horned Death's Head skull and crossbones
Organization: Holy Way
Avatar: Bone's avatar is always a perfectly-formed Pale wearing armor made of bone and accompanied by his servant, a seagull the size of a small dog. Bone's avatar has never been spotted anywhere but upon the bone ship composed of Pale who have died in battle. Captain Smith, of the Whorl-runner Shadowhammer, writes this of his encounter with the Palic deity, "Bone's ship has no name, but it is a larger version of a Palic clanship, made of the fused bones of fallen Palic warriors who have died valiantly in battle. It is crewed by the most worthy of those warriors. The ship's sails are tattered sharkskin, and flap noisily in the wind of that blue, ethereal sea, where great spires of stone rise up from the waves and the pirating is always good. "The ship is Bone, but Bone is also the captain of the ship, and he appears as a massive Pale in armor carved from bones and whose skin is painted in warrior's colors. He sits in a huge sharkskin-covered throne at the stern, with his seagull perched upon his shoulder, and watches as his crew wrestle one another in a chalk circle drawn on the deck." Smith is the only non-Pale who has ever reported having seen the ship-deity, but from the sharkskin scrolls of the Law of the Pale we can learn that "…and those of destiny shall see the Ship as in a fog, and it shall be a sign." So apparently, living Pale who are specially favored by Bone might see the ship, either in a dream or in a dream-like state. Those who do are honored by the Pale and given special treatment and training. It is also said that if a particularly favored Pale has died by betrayal, Bone can send his psychopomp seagull to awaken that Pale for the purpose of vengeance. Bone gave the Pale the Law, an array of sharkskin scrolls that set down the code of behavior of the Pale and the consequences of disobedience. Among the Laws are these important tenets: "Roam the seas, for they are yours, as are the shores they lap upon;" "Honor clansman and ship, and suffer no dishonor to come to either;" and, "All are subservient to the Pale, for the Pale are the sons and daughters of the sea herself." Temples to Bone are within the Palic clanships themselves, and what is done there isn't known with certainty to anyone I have talked with, though many say that blood sacrifices to the god-ship are practiced, and that it is there where the Pale partake of sentient flesh. Personally, I find that to be a sign of prejudice, as I have never been treated poorly by a Pale, unless she, like her clansfolk, was painted for war. Priests of Bone are said to wear horned skulls and carry shamanistic paraphenalia. Bone is allied with no other Arcana for good or ill -- he is a pirate and a rogue, and enjoys that life.
