Tuchanka

Tuchanka is the homeworld of the krogan and the capital of the Krogan Clans, which now form the Krogan Sector within the United Federation of Nations (UFN). Once a world of abundant life and evolutionary competition, Tuchanka was devastated by nuclear war, reducing it to an irradiated wasteland of bombardment craters, salt flats, alkaline seas, and choking ash. The nuclear winter that followed wiped out most remaining plant life, forcing the krogan into a long dark age of tribal warfare and resource scarcity.   Following centuries of decline, the krogan experienced a resurgence after contact with the salarians, who helped relocate them to less hostile worlds where their population could recover. Many krogan later returned to their homeworld, rebuilding what they had lost. However, the genophage, a sterilization measure imposed upon the krogan by outside powers, severely limited population growth. Krogan leadership sought to overcome the genophage by retreating into vast underground bunkers, but this only accelerated its transmission. By the time of the Reaper War, Tuchanka’s population remained a fraction of what it once was.   With the defeat of the Reapers and the integration of the Krogan Clans into the UFN, a massive reconstruction and terraforming initiative was launched, gradually restoring Tuchanka to a vibrant, habitable world. Though the krogan still honor their warrior traditions, they now wield their strength as a united and respected force within the Federation.

Geography and Climate

Tuchanka orbits the F-class star Aralakh, meaning "Eye of Wrath" in the Raik Clan dialect. The planet was once covered in thick jungles and silty seas, supporting a vast and deadly ecosystem where life evolved through constant competition and predation. After the nuclear wars, the planet’s albedo dropped, causing temperatures to rise significantly. To stabilize conditions, the Council Demilitarization Enforcement Mission (CDEM) constructed a vast orbital shroud at the L1 Lagrange point, which remained in operation for centuries to regulate the climate.   Since the UFN-led terraforming efforts, much of Tuchanka’s former ecosystem has been revived. While large wastelands and irradiated zones still exist, the reintroduction of native flora and fauna, along with extensive atmospheric engineering, has seen the planet reclaim its former biodiversity. However, the ecosystem remains just as lethal as ever—nearly every species exhibits some form of predatory behavior, and even the vegetation is carnivorous in many areas. Travel outside guarded zones is still considered extremely hazardous.

Urban Development and Infrastructure

Krogan society has historically been centered around clan fortresses, war camps, and underground shelters, with little in the way of centralized governance. Over the centuries, most major cities were reduced to ruins due to tribal conflicts, resource wars, and nuclear devastation. However, post-war reconstruction under the UFN has allowed for the construction of modern, fortified urban centers, blending krogan resilience with advanced Federation infrastructure.   Tuchanka’s largest settlement is Urdnot’s Throne, built atop the ruins of Urdnot Keep—a symbolic reclamation of the krogan’s past. Other major cities and strongholds have been rebuilt and modernized, incorporating self-sustaining infrastructure, clean energy production, and advanced water purification systems to support population growth. However, many krogan still prefer semi-nomadic lifestyles, settling near strategic locations, natural resources, or clan-affiliated territories.

Economic and Military Power

Tuchanka has emerged as a formidable industrial and military power within the UFN. The krogan’s natural warrior culture and resilience make them valuable assets in security, mercenary work, and UFN military operations. The planet has become a major producer of military hardware, specializing in heavy armor, combat vehicles, and personal weaponry designed for extreme environments and high-impact combat.   Agriculture remains a developing sector, with UFN-backed initiatives helping to restore fertile lands and provide stable food sources. While many krogan still rely on hunting, ranching, and traditional survivalist practices, advances in hydroponics and sustainable farming have reduced the planet’s reliance on imported food. Additionally, Tuchanka’s vast untapped mineral wealth is beginning to be exploited once more, contributing to the economic revitalization of the Krogan Sector.

Governance and UFN Integration

Krogan society has always been structured around clan loyalty and martial strength, with leadership determined through combat, strategy, and political maneuvering. Historically, this led to constant internal conflict, but the post-Reaper era saw a shift towards greater unity under the Urdnot Clan, which spearheaded efforts to bring the clans together under a single leadership.   With Tuchanka’s integration into the UFN, krogan governance has remained largely autonomous, with the Great Clans maintaining regional authority. The UFN recognizes the Clan Council, which serves as the primary governing body, and oversees matters of trade, military organization, and planetary development. While disputes still arise, the introduction of UFN diplomatic mediation and economic incentives has helped maintain peace between the clans.   Despite this, some traditionalists resist change, preferring the old ways of trial by combat and territorial conquest. The transition into the UFN political framework is still ongoing, but Tuchanka has already demonstrated its ability to contribute strategically, militarily, and economically to the wider Federation.

Cultural Identity and Legacy

Despite the changes brought about by UFN membership, the core krogan identity remains strong. Honor, strength, and resilience continue to define their way of life, and many young krogan still undergo traditional rites of passage, including the Rite of Passage on Tuchanka, which has become a cultural staple once again. Gladiatorial combat, ritual hunts, and grand feasts remain common, serving as both entertainment and a reaffirmation of krogan heritage.   The Great Clans have worked to restore lost krogan history, rebuilding ancient libraries, honoring the pre-nuclear history of their people, and preserving key historical sites. While krogan are now seen as valuable members of the Federation, they continue to shape their own path, maintaining their unique traditions while embracing the opportunities of interstellar cooperation.   Tuchanka stands as one of the greatest success stories of planetary reclamation. Once a world ravaged by nuclear war and internal strife, it is now a thriving homeworld, balancing its warrior culture with newfound stability and prosperity. As a core world of the Krogan Sector within the UFN, Tuchanka has become a major military-industrial powerhouse, a symbol of krogan resilience, and a beacon of hope for their continued growth as a species.   With its reclaimed ecosystems, fortified cities, and renewed political unity, Tuchanka has evolved from a dying world into a proud and thriving member of the United Federation of Nations, ensuring that the krogan legacy will endure for generations to come.
