Summary
Burning Born is a myth from the Kobolds on Crystal King. They believe that a worthy Kobold can jump into the lava of Crystal King and walk out transformed. Stalactite wings and stone armor will fuse itself to the legendary kobold, transforming them into something resembling a gargoyle with extraordinary powers, what they call a Volignisithe
Variations & Mutation
This magical transformation has ignited the imaginations of kobolds in every city sewer or dark dungeon. Wherever there is an elemental oddity, such as the chasms and crevasses near Icerise or the poisonous swamps of Liskat, the myth has shifted to accommodate the more local elemental phenomena. Icerise for example has a small band of kobolds in residence who believe that jumping into the chasms and crevasses near that frozen citadel will create a similar monster as the Volignisithe but made of ice and stone instead of fire. Liskat kobold whisper that jumping into one of the many poisonous bogs near the walls of the city will grace a worthy kobold with powers over vegetation and stone. Whether any of these are true is unlikely. It's more likely that these are drawn from the imaginations of kobolds hoping to be more than their mean standing allows. Obviously the name of this process changes since it's no longer a lake of fire kobolds are trying to go swimming in and the monstrosities that they hope to become take on their own identities as well.
Cultural Reception
Any sentient creature committing what is likely to be suicide is deeply disturbing no matter where the myth, or any variation of it, is acted upon. Kobolds are actively stopped from jumping into the lava on Crystal King since a kobold deluded enough to jump cannot be trusted with their own safety.
