Tusks of Strength and Bravery

The overgrown thicket trail leads up moss-covered stones to a cave entrance. The packed earth is oiled and level, and the oscillating breeze from within carries alternating waves of aerated water and the sour smell of old soot and sweat. The entrance ends at a ledge overlooking a shrine of unusual make - two stones carved like tusks form an archway over a stone circle filled with red clay. Sweating figures glisten in the firelight from the pyres that surround the pit as they dig at the clay with enormous tools of iron.   Deeper: The cave serves as the shrine of  Wild Belly, an ancient denizen who delights in displays of strength and bravery. The stone tusks are its totems of power in the shrine. To seek the blessing of Wild Belly, a worshiper must bring an offering of salt, oil, and clay in a wooden bowl. When placed before the tusks, these offerings form into a Clay Pearl, a sacred blessing from Wild Belly.   The shrine’s pit is a hub of activity and physical prowess. At any given time, there will be d8+2 mud wrestlers engaged in vigorous activities. To gain favor or test one's strength, a worshiper may offer their Clay Pearl to a wrestler, and if accepted, will engage the worshiper in a match - the first to be pushed out of the circle or have any other part of the body but their feet touch the ground loses the match.   If the match is won, the wrestler will return the Clay Pearl and another. If the match is lost, so is the Clay Pearl.   Below the shrine, a natural stream fills a pool with clear water, used by worshipers to wash and purify themselves. The serene and cool waters offer a stark contrast to the intense activities within the shrine, providing a peaceful retreat.   For those seeking rest and refreshment, the alcove offers solace. A table always contains a stone pitcher of fresh milk, a basket of stone fruit, and an iron cauldron of hot porridge. Thick, rich carpets of wool cover the floor, and rejuvenating incense and oils provide a place for exhausted worshipers to rest and recuperate.   Wild Belly
