The Inherited Keep
Like a molar worn nearly to the gum, an island sits not far offshore in the wrack of the Silt-Salt Sea. The remnants of a fortification sit on its cap, walls worn nearly round by the constant wild winds of the area. The sea itself her is spread thin, so that in occasional moments, it recedes far enough for the land below the sea to show a wide rock bridge peppered with slurping tide pools.
Deeper: Corrhéo’s northern shore, a place where bastions of an older civilization once stood before the seas swept them away. Ghost towns, old sentinel fortresses that no longer guard what they guarded, places that have lost their weight.
This place has seen the greatest transition as the sea swept out and the Silt Salt Sea came in.
One of these great domed hills on the desolate point is now a web of Yaddish slavers, who feel comfortable in their anthill. They have complete what was left unfinished, an old building—an infant fortress still under construction. The people building it were swept from life by the sea. [(d8 + 3) * 10] skeletons can be found inside, washed against an ancient stone wall where the builders sought shelter during the disaster.
This fortification has a basement with a pier structure—great pillars driven into the ground now broken and splintered at top, torn up when the sea went out and swept in.
A young matron, Dr'Nae D'Polio, has made her home here, taking over the shell of remains of the building that many assumed lost. Few visit because it sits on a wasteland, a vast flat expanse that regularly submerges as the tide rises. What’s left is often marooned, wrapped in the Silt Salt Sea but can sometimes be reached by foot when the tide is right.
Her new structure is hidden from view. Above ground, only remnants of the old, incomplete fortress remain. Nearby Corrhéans simply call it the “Gone Keep.”
[1 on a d4]: A small sect of Yaddish, Brood of Eraysus, camp in the wasteland nearby, using recent tunnels as access and hiding. They visit the keep discreetly, sometimes by boat, sometimes overland. They dress similarly to the Yaddish of the keep, but court nearby peoples, hoping to undermine the young matron's foothold, while not revealing the semi-permanent Yaddish presence in the area. They pose as charming seducers of adventuring parties, warriors, or government agents, pretending to have real estate aims on what is barren, cursed land. They try to upscale or point out resources that could be salvaged for the right buyer. They’ve sent emissaries, charmed slaves—human or berrylmen—into communities to raise funds and subtly expose the Yaddish presence.
Stitch Bern Hedley, a historian and environmentalist and ensorcelled iron golem is actively scouting and mapping the aboveground ruins and has both found no sign of the underground Yaddish and been entirely unswayable by their nighttime efforts at scent-trapping and scent-swaying. Hedley aims to maintain the integrity of the old building though their tenure here at The Gone Keep swaps every [d4 weeks] with another member of their guild.
Unlike the average Yaddish formian, the hive's matron, D'Ipolio, is adept at disguise. She has developed a relationship with Acolyte of Wash clerics, allowing her to take on various forms. She keeps two exiled alchemists in her employ.
She has traveled in human guise, sometimes as a male, and has never done an ounce of physical work. She prefers destinations where poverty exacerbates her sense of distance from her home country. She has two sons, talented builders in the Keep, who benefit from her status.
She is often accompanied by a smaller Formian male named Orbo, who possesses a massive intellect and is highly skilled. Orbo’s ingenuity and philanthropy often help distract from D'I'polio’s peculiarities, and assist in her travels. He provides an unusual, non-Yaddish care for the populations they visit.
Drenae D'Ipolio also maintains a small slave colony of herbalists and green growers, inspired by her visits to desert oases. This colony has developed an underground sunlit garden that stretches into beautiful, crystal domed undersea caves that peer up through clear lodes to gather sunlight
