Sandalwick Point Cemetery
On the mountain’s lower slopes, a low stone wall wraps a nest of graves above the misty wetlands. The air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and a faint trace of sandalwood, remnant of the groves that once thrived here.
Deeper: The moss-covered wall has an iron gate which creaks softly in the breeze, bearing a tarnished plaque. Inside, a gravel path winds through rows of graves, marked by stones that range from simple slabs to intricate monuments.
The gravel road leads to a piazza where streams of water trickle from a tasteful fountain, filling a pool at its base. The fountain is surprisingly free of debris and algae—just goldfish which nip at insect larvae before waddling back amongst the roots of lotus plants. The solemn quiet of the piazza is occasionally broken by other visitors [D6, Sandalwick Encounters].
One gravestone is split in half, jagged. Beneath the rubble is a bronze plaque very unlike the others.
The inscription:
"In shadow seep, one key, asleep;Rubble toppled by a gnarled sandalwood tree and overgrowth has hidden the eastern path. This goes through the tangled woods to a shrubby clearing thick with patches of wild sage. The Gates of Perdition, an elaborate tomb, is visible from here. The unmarked tomb is massive and its ancient bronze doors are sealed tight. On closer inspection, the alcove is likewise elaboratly decorated, save four modest statues of a young woman different positions: kneeling, reaching, in curtsey, and abed. All of their eyes appear streaked with tears of blood. A gravestone with a weathered epitaph is beside her. The letters are barely legible. A cherub and cambion sit on it patiently, necks craned in attention. Speak the forgotten phrase to open the gates of the sealed tomb. The forgotten phrase can be learned from the sorrowful spirit that haunts the cemetery. The Gates of Perdition lead to the old Mayhew Mausoleum, which itself contains a secret entryway to an ancient warrior's tomb. Clues
her roots entwine to hidden line so
mournful gaze begs forgot phrase."
