The GM can substitute this landmark for any random encounter.
Short salt-encrusted spires eroded by wind and ocean mists reflect sunlight in dazzling patterns visible from afar. Shallow, briny lagoons surround them, pungent with the scent of salt and decaying seaweed. Sparse, resilient shrubs cling like ivy to the salt-crusted rocks at their base as the air thrums with the droning of biting flies.
Deeper: At night, careful travelers can pass through these lands unchallenged. However, during the day, the buzzing of the Bristle Flies is deafening at the base of the Salt Spires, prompting a penalty to [Listen, Concentration] checks. Anyone with exposed skin must make a [Disease (Difficult)] check or suffer the effects of Silt Sickness. Those infected will begin to exhibit symptoms within [D10+5 minutes]. Those with water rations are able to stave off the unbearable thirst, those that do not must make a [Willpower (Hard)] save to resist drinking from the Briny Pools and risk contracting Shepards Disease.
The observant may notice the slow but steady glistening droplets from the Weeping Thorns. Enough can be collected into a water vessel in the course of an hour to sate the effects of Silt Sickness.
The ground is littered with remains in various states of decay and debris of old equipment protruding from the sand. Spending a turn here, an industrious seeker [D4 Supplies, Tool, or Weapon] in decent condition.

Briny Pools
The Briny Pools are fetid with rot and putrescence, a mixture of stagnant water, collected in endorheic basins around the base of the spires. Drinking this water will induce require the a successful save [Disease (Difficult)] or contract Shepards Disease.
Bristle Flies
The Bristle Fly is a carnivorous insect with compound mouthparts featuring beak like jaws for biting into flesh and a set of thin, bristle like proboscises for secreting anti-coagulants and digestive enzymes into the wounds they make.
This particular colony of flies often feeds on egg clusters of the Silt Flea exposed beneath the sand by various elements of nature. Those creatures bitten may become infected by the fly with Silt Sickness [Disease (Difficult)] induced by the Sand Flea larvae.
These flies are diurnal, active only during the daylight hours. At night they cling to the nearby shrubbery, helpless and dormant.
Gravewax
A grayish waxy substance formed by the decomposition of soft tissue in dead bodies subjected to moisture. This material is one of the three Prima Materia of the Profane Alchemies and may be harvested [D6+2] per turn spent [Arcana (Moderate)] and used as a component of artifice for their invocations.
Salt Spires
Enormous staves of salt crystal impaled into the earth like arrows on a battlefield. They are as thick as old pines yet nowhere near as tall, caked with earth, clay and sand. Black pools of briny liquid collects at their base, slick with an oily, rainbow sheen. The salt is dirty, contaminated somehow to secrete waxy masses Gravewax from fractures in the crystal.
Shepards Disease
A disease most often contracted [Disease (Hard)] by drinking from fetid pools of stagnant water. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle pains, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Symptoms usually begin [D8+2] days after a failed save. All [Physical] skill checks are made at disadvantage, and all [Movement] is reduced to one unit while afflicted.
Each day, the infected makes a [Disease (Hard)] check and the condition ends after two consecutive successes.
Silt Flea
Silt Fleas are small silicate based insectoids closely related to raze, however their parasitic lifecycles require a mammalian host in order to propagate. Silt flea larvae will desiccate their hosts and feed on the remnant salts and minerals. Each day, the player makes a [Death (Moderate)] save, whereupon three consecutive successes cures the disease or three consecutive failures causes death.
After death, there is a gestation and metamorphasis period which lasts for [D4+1] days after which the larvae will emerge as mature fleas to mate and, if female, lay their eggs in clutches beneath sand, silt or loamy soil.
When the eggs are ingested or are saturated with water, there is a brief incubation period of [D10+5] minutes whereafter the egg cluster will hatch the larvae and quickly spread
Silt Sickness
Silt Sickness is a disease which exhibits the following symptoms [D10+5 minutes] after being bitten. This condition causes uncontrollable sweating, salivation and an unquenchable thirst. Due to the compulsions and an absence of focus, all [Mental] and [Social] skill checks are made at a disadvantage.
Each day, the host makes a [Death (Moderate)] save, whereupon three consecutive successes cures the disease or three consecutive failures causes death.
Weeping Thorns
The source of the water collecting at the base of the spires, the branches of these thorny shrubs grow outward like ivy in long, thorny vines covered in rust colored fleshy leaves. The leaves absorb sunlight and feeds on mineral deposits found in and on the spire and secretes fresh water from its thorns as a byproduct.
