Prospector's Camp

On the ledge of a gully down below the quarry pools where the siphon drains into a sump and outfall, a path through cleared shrubbery follows the gully and winds around a earthwork rise to a camp ground sheltered and secured in the hillside. It is lean, constructed for with a mind for the economy of function. Fires bellow sparks and smoke from forge and foundry at all hours. Millstones cut and grind crude crystalline cores down to impossibly thin, iridescent wafers. Silence is alien here, the sharp pangs and clatter of industry drowns the subtle murmurs of nature.   Deeper: The camp is cleverly defended made on a rise of earth serving as a natural rampart that restricts the approach of interlopers to a path wrapping around the perimeter. Any who approach would be easily spotted on the path and exposed to missile fire [Defenders: Advantage Ranged Attacks; Attackers: Disadvantage Ranged Attacks].   The thick brush and shrubs off the path have been defoliated creating a no mans land of dried saplings, twigs, branches and piles of crackling leaves. Carefully hidden trip lines with waxed tinder sticks and strikers lay low beneath the eyeline, ready to send a spark to the litter afoot [Intruders: Save vs Trap; d6 fire for 2d4 rounds].   Heavy gabions of thorny brambles grow from loose wicker baskets filled with a mixture of earth, sphagnum and clay, are staked and piled, creating hedge walls around the camp, obscuring visibility and creating an effective barrier [Defenders: half cover; Attackers: penalty to perception].   At the entrance, a trapdoor covers a pit trap cleverly disguised to blend in with the ground, ready to drop interlopers down to the walled pit deep below. This pit serves as both a cesspool and prison for intruders [Trap: Save vs Trap; d6 fall -> Save vs Poison; d4 poison / turn].   Atop the rise, the camp grounds exudes an order of uniformity and clean lines made with practiced precision. A large central pavilion of carved wooden frames and canvas housed a large wooden table covered in drawings, charts, lanterns and tools. An array of indistinguishable samples of stone and crystals fill jars of all sizes.   Reception:   [Friendly, Allied] A call from atop the watchtower on the rise heard over the clamor as a friendly face waves you over and into the camp. The gate guard welcomes you back as the Surveyor and Prospector greet you with a smile.   [Neutral, Distrustful] A horn blares three short blasts from the watchtower atop rise which drowns out the clamor of the camp. A skeptical man calls out, "This is a private camp stranger, are you lost?"   [Hostile] A horn blares a long blast from watchtower atop the rise and the clamor of the camp ceases a footstep scamper hurriedly and the distinct notching of crossbows can be heard. A stern voice calls "You are not welcome here. Stand where you are and state your business."
