Precipice of Beyond

High above the Porter's Road to the south, the highlands give way to broken plateaus and steep cliffside passes. Atop one such desolate plateau lies a deep, shadow-filled chasm enshrouding an unnatural spiral staircase circling a gaping column of air, descending all the way to the bedrock below. The chasm's walls are coated with a glassy, black substance that reflects no light. There is no moisture here, only cold and dust.   Deeper: The hollow was once the abode of a cult of mystics who have rediscovered a way to tap into the void between worlds. Their rituals involve drawing power from this void, using obsidian mirrors to channel the energy and focus it into matter, at first, trinkets and baubles, but later, flesh and bone.   But their rituals were as imperfect as their understanding of the powers they toyed with, which led to their demise. Now, nightly, the area surrounding hollow becomes a perilous place as the shadows come alive, hunting the living in hopes of regaining form. They are the shades of the mystics, trapped and bound to the shadows of the void between worlds.   At the base of the chasm lies crumbling dais, carved from obsidian, which is said to be the anchor and portal to the void between worlds. The energy radiating from the dais is the only solace for the shades while the sun shines on the world above. It is a gateway to the void, and those who approach it unprepared are lost forever.   Void Trinkets and Baubles
  1. Nīedstan Amulet. A smooth, dark stone that seems to absorb light, set in a simple pendant. Grants minor protection from dark entities but induces unsettling dreams.
  2. Sceaduglob. A glass orb containing swirling shadows. Used for scrying into the void but risks attracting shades.
  3. Viserfeoh. A dark metal coin that emits faint voices of void cult chants. Acts as a token of luck or protection.

  5. Wēodflēam Candel. A small candle made from a dark, waxy substance that burns with a cold, blue flame. Used in rituals to communicate with the void but can attract shades if used improperly.
  6. Dēorcwæter Flāsc. A vial filled with an inky, black liquid that seems to absorb light. When consumed, it grants visions of the void but leaves the drinker feeling cold and detached.
