Periat Keep

A long crenellated high-wall, and behind it one higher still, both furred with the steel tips of permanent artillery. Two ravines surround an impressive castle built into and on top of a red-black bluff. A noise of happenings—purchases, shouting, calls to children—come from between the walls, and soldiers are everywhere.     Deeper: This far south, Periat Keep is the southernmost point solidifying the outer ring of the Corrhéonic Stand's power in Corrhéo.   The mixed stone-work of its face wall, fifty years in and still in development, makes it look like a brindle bull-chested mastiff facing the Chennuck Range, knobby young mountains that run south from Corrhéo into the wilderlands. Its thick front legs are an enormous pair of columns that prop the base of the bluff, supporting the upper keep and ballistae battlements.   Pot-helmeted crews are on regular, noisy patrol. Censers full of watchfire are lit in stub-forts along the outer wall, run night-round by cask-fed rivulets of raze oil.   A small encampment of hangers-on called Praederside has most services. The first street and only street is called Carillon Row.   Naeten Hork is Praederside's mayor. A dark-faced specter of a man, 1 on a d4 and the preserved eye of the Flayed Man kept in ceramic on his hearth has taken hold of him and he is being controlled for revenge.   Periat Keep is led by the pallid Praeori twins, O and A, two knights who've found it best to wield the power of ritual, worship, and the ability to read over the populace in their range; they hold dynamic, punctual sermons in the Keep's Paer Hall with a line of horn players blowing long trumpets for effect. They also levy sharp tax levies. Holy days are frequent.   [ d6 table of Holy Days : name, simple effect on local commerce, dress, and reaction from haters ]   Any Intelligent encounter in the area will be accompanied by a roll on the Corrhéonic Stand encounter table.    Helpful civilians are easy to meet, and are unnaturally nosy and willing to rat on anyone for anything.
