Nervuré Distillery
Located in the grasslands below Nervuré Monastery, the Nervuré Distillery taps into a fresh wellspring and receives shipments of Cail from the monastery’s terraced fields. Here, skilled distillers produce Cailtri, a unique spirit known for its earthy, robust flavor. Using traditional copper stills, they transform the hardy triticale into a spirit that has become famous across Corrheo. Aging in wooden casks, the Cailtri develops a smooth character that locals and travelers cherish.
Deeper: Established decades ago by the monastery’s outreach efforts, the distillery began as a modest operation to support Nervuré’s livelihood. Recognizing the unique opportunity of the local wellspring and the monastery’s resilient Cail grain, monks partnered with artisans from nearby villages to perfect the distillation process.
Transporting Cail from Nervuré Monastery to the distillery relies on donkeys and skilled porters. These sturdy animals, equipped with secure saddlebags, navigate the rugged mountain paths, each trip guided by experienced hands.
The Donkey Stables, located at the monastery’s base, are overseen by Brother Eldric, a dedicated monk who humbly cares for the animals. Eldric trains the donkeys to handle the rough terrain and ensures they’re well-rested between trips. Respected by porters for his skill, Eldric’s guidance keeps the vital Cail supply flowing smoothly down to the distillery. For a price, these sturdy pack animals can be hired with a guide to go into the mountains.
The annual Cailtri Auction has become a celebrated yet contested event. Each autumn, future barrels of Cailtri are sold, often long before aging is complete. This auction attracts merchants, nobles, and collectors across Corrheo, turning the ordinarily peaceful distillery into a hotbed of competition and intrigue. Fierce rivalries arise as buyers vie for influence and claim on limited Cailtri barrels, stirring underhanded dealings and disputes.
