A Jail of Winds
This is an unformed landmark
I haven't added a den in a while, and so I was inclined toward something deep and bowl-shaped. The Evergaols of Elden Ring are impressive, capturing and imprisoning something.
What might the Popolos have imprisoned?
As keepers of the earth, and freshness, they would typically oppose stagnation. Therefore, they might trap something in an endless circle of movement to prevent it from staying still.
This raises the question: What is something that grows more powerful when it stays still
Stench?
Stench is created by decay, which originates from tiny microorganisms like bacteria that eat, digest, and release gas. So, something gaseous imprisoned in a state of constant motion? Could be a wind orb—a sort of maze or track of winds. Something like that would be unendurable unless it could be entered or broken.
I imagine that people nearby might use the wind funnel as a means of transport or for drying something. But what are the large things that we might dry with wind? We could cool something if it was hot or turn a liquid into a cooler liquid state, as in a distillery or still.
Given a still where someone harnesses the captured foetid forces that the Popolos originally trapped, something else might want to stop the distillery or take from it? What are the outputs of a distillery? Besides the actual product, what are the byproducts in the distillation process? What if these byproducts were bottled up or dispensed with in large quantities? What could grow from them that might become dangerous?
To summarize: The wind has been trapped in a large bowl, and several farms or stills have set up on its precipice, using the constant revolving wind to power their chemical processes, converting them into something that is bottled and sold. However, whatever is feeding on the byproduct of these stills is growing too. As it grows, it threatens the stills and possibly the bowl of wind itself.
Further Q&A:
What is something that grows more powerful when it stays still, besides stench?
Darkness; as it settles, it becomes more impenetrable.
Ice; the longer it remains, the thicker and more treacherous it becomes.
Silence; it becomes more oppressive the longer it endures.
Suspicion; left unchecked, it deepens and spreads.
What other large things might we dry with wind?
Grains or crops in bulk.
Large swathes of fabric or hides.
Lumber, to prevent rot.
Salt, as part of a crystallization process.
Byproducts of a distillation process?
Heat, which could be siphoned off and used.
Fumes or vapors, which might be captured or released.
Spent grains or organic material, which could become fertile ground for something else.
Residual water, possibly contaminated or infused with remnants of the process.
What could grow from distillation byproducts in a way that it becomes dangerous?
A parasitic plant or fungus that thrives on the waste.
A toxic gas that accumulates and seeps into the environment.
An invasive species that uses the byproducts as a breeding ground.
A corrupted form of life, mutated by prolonged exposure to the alchemical processes.
