Madren, Child of Twilight and Whispers
Role in the Scene
Release Moment:
As the Harbinger of Madness is defeated, a surge of chaotic energy explodes outward before condensing into a small, trembling figure. The shadows peel away like burnt paper, revealing Madren in his true form. His breathing is ragged, his expression wide-eyed and fearful, as if awakening from a nightmare.
His kaleidoscopic eyes dart between the party, and he whispers, “I... I didn’t mean to... they made me... I’m sorry...” His voice cracks, tears streaming down his cheeks as the swirling madness in his aura begins to fade, leaving behind an overwhelming sense of sorrow.
Departure:
Moments after his release, a soft, golden light shines from a nearby tear in reality—a portal to the Feywild. The faint sound of Oberon’s voice can be heard, soothing yet commanding, calling Madren home.
Madren hesitates at the portal’s edge, his small form shuddering. He turns back to the party, his voice trembling.
“Woof Woof - I did like that - Woofy Woofy Bark Bark!!"
Race: Fey (Eladrin)
Age: Unknown (Appears 10–12 years old)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral (once freed)
Background: Fey Royalty (Kidnapped)
Appearance
Madren’s hair, once deep indigo, cascades in waves flecked with silver, as if the night sky itself weaves through it. His eyes, large and luminous, shimmer with a kaleidoscope of colors that seem to shift and swirl with his emotions—light and dark in eternal conflict, disturbing for their lack of pupil in the swiling vortex of colour.
His pale, almost translucent skin glows faintly in dim light, the faintest patterns of shifting runes flowing across his arms like whispers from an ancient language. He wears a tattered tunic of iridescent twilight hues, shimmering with faint glimmers of starlight, a stark contrast to the shredded edges and shadowy stains—remnants of his corruption.
Though regal, his small form trembles with the weight of his past torment, his once-bright aura dimmed by centuries of anguish and madness.
Personality
Before Release: Bound to the Harbinger of Madness, Madren’s true consciousness is drowned beneath the chaotic and oppressive spirit of his corrupted form. His presence is marked by disjointed laughter, nonsensical speech, and an aura of suffocating confusion. Any glimpses of the child he once was appear as fleeting moments of sadness amidst the storm of his madness.
After Release: Once freed, Madren’s personality is fragmented, like a shattered mirror barely held together. He struggles to make sense of himself, alternating between timid fear and a haunting curiosity. Despite his confusion, a flicker of mischief and playfulness, remnants of his fey nature, occasionally shines through. He is torn between gratitude for the party’s actions and guilt for the suffering his Harbinger form caused.
Core Traits: Vulnerable, inquisitive, and deeply remorseful. Madren clings to the first person who shows him kindness, though shadows of his Harbinger-induced trauma often cause him to withdraw suddenly.
Abilities
Innate Magic (Passive):
Madren’s latent magical energy manifests briefly upon his release:
- Aura of Clarity: Upon his release, all creatures within 30 feet are freed from charmed, frightened, or madness-like effects, as his presence momentarily clears the mind.
- Veil of Stars: Faint motes of starlight swirl around Madren when he moves, casting dim light in a 10-foot radius and creating brief illusions of shifting constellations.
- Memory Rift: Madren unconsciously causes small ripples in reality, creating eerie echoes of past conversations and emotions in his vicinity, disorienting those nearby.
