Twenty six years ago, a private airship on a secret expedition crashed over the jungles of the southern continent. A rescue mission failed to find the crash site, driven off by the worst hurricane in recorded history. A lone survivor, a young girl no older than four, emerged from the wreckage. Around her neck was a tooth bound in amber and tied with rough cord. The local wildlife took her in, caring for her as their own. A family of wolves became her new family. She ran among the animals and built a humble home for herself from the crash site.
Throughout her life she ran into the inhabitants of the local area. Around 10 she encountered a village of humans, her first such contact, though she'd seen pictures in the wreckage of the airship. She made friends with a boy in that village, who shared his records with her, exposing her to the world of music for the first time. It left a lifelong impression on her.
But as she got closer to the world of humanity, humanity got closer to her world. The locals were fearful of the encroaching wildlife. When she brought her friend into the woods with her to see her home and meet her new family, the village launched a search and rescue mission to track the boy down. It ended in gunfire and blood, and the death of the wolves who'd raised her for so long.
As she fled through the forest from the only life she'd known, she came across a mysterious shrine, covered in moss and carved from glossy black stones. Within she discovered a corpse killed in a trap. On the walls, she saw a carving depicting the very amulet she'd worn since she was a young girl. The corpse had a bundle of unfamiliar money, a sketching of the amulet, and a fold-up map of a distant city--Northport.
