Vokkar
This is a large town on the eastern shore of the Windy Sea. The town is mainly on a rock outcropping projecting into the sea. Sea cliffs ranging from 200 to 150 feet protect the town on three sides. The landward side can be approached up a steep, rocky slope traversed by a single cobblestone road with numerous switchbacks. The town is walled on all sides, but the landward side has 30’ tall walls protected by twelve strongly built towers mounting artillery engines and a powerfully built gatehouse complex. A smaller lower town extends along a sheltered bay on the southern side of the town. Vokkar Bay has a single narrow opening to the sea flanked by the town on the north and a small, but strongly built fortress on the South. The opening is covered by trebuchets and catapults and a chain boom can be used to close the channel.
The upper town features the houses of Vokkar’s merchant nobility. The houses are fortified compounds made to protect the noble families and their wealth from attack and theft. The narrow streets of the upper town featured the workshops of many metal workers who are well known for the production of everything from cookware to weapons. At the center of the Upper Town is the Ducal Palace. This is an impressive structure featuring a tall clock tower incorporated into a three story structure built around a colonnaded courtyard. The Lower Town has a series of stone quays that have large warehouse complexes built on them. The waterfront is lines with the usual collection of questionable inns, brothels and purveyors of maritime goods. The Lower Town is mainly inhabited by dockworkers, fisher folk and others connected to surviving the needs of the merchant fleet.
The Dukedom of Vokkar has been held by the Korlinn family for four generations. The current Duke, Elston Korlinn has as heirs two adult daughters Katerina and Varina. Both women are warriors of some repute. Elston’s brother Arlin is suspected of plotting to displace his nieces and seize the dukedom.
The interior of Vokkar consists of a dozen large villages on the estates of the noble families. Most of these estates are heavily involved in wine, cheese and fruit production. The noble families have a hold over most of the good farmland and the remaining freeholders are increasingly losing control of their land to the noble families.
