Engineer and Artillery Companies
These companies of specialist troops are relatively rare. These units are garrisoned at major Alyite fortresses where they work on strengthening and maintaining the defenses. These troops typically wear studded leather armor or mail. They wear light cavalry helmets. They are armed with short swords, daggers and typically have engineering tools like picks and spades. These units know how to building siege engines such as catapults, trebuchets and covered rams. In recent years they have learned how to use gun powder for such purposes as mining operations and blowing up gates.
Composition
Manpower
An engineer/artillery company is a 120 member organization including five officers, five sergeants and 110 troops.
Equipment
These units have a great deal of equipment including carpenters tools, ladders, mantlets, axes, spades, picks and sledgehamers. They can build most any weapons requite for siege weapons.
Weaponry
The short sword is the favored weapons of the engineer with studded leather armor or chain mail for protection. The engineers often use their tools like picks, sledgehammers, spades and axes as weapons
Vehicles
The companies typically use heavy cargo wagons to transport their equipment, but if going into rough country they will substitue large numbers of pack mules.
Structure
Companies are commanded by a Captain of Engineers assisted by two lieutenants and two ensigns with five sergeants.
Tactics
Alyite engineers tend to be very methodical. They carefully survey and map the target of their assault. After calculating the most vulnerable points in their objective they will construct the engines most suitable for the attack. In recent they have developed tactics where they will undermine a fortress and use barrels of gunpowder to blow up gatehouses, towers and sections of wall.
Training
These units routinely build and maintain siege weapons and perform work on Alyite controlled fortifications They periodically use old and abandoned structures to practice their techniques. They also engage in routine combat training with the emphasis on close quarters fighting.
